What can you do with a ridiculously tiny 40MB data bundle?

Simple law of supply and demand. Vodacom would not be offering these low usage bundles if they were not in demand. Remember when Vodacom first came out with data bundles, the lowest was 500 Mb. But with over 30 Millions subscribers, at least ten million of them only want to check their e-mail and maybe download a ring tone or two a month. For them a 20Mb bundle is more than adequate. I would not be surprised if Vodacom has 5 million people or so using the 20 or 40 Mb data bundle, and probably not even using all of it each month.

You guys are all thinking normal broadband use... you are forgetting how many phones there are out there with only GPRS or maybe EDGE (and some of them are even iPhones! :p).

I think this article is a bundle of bull pukkie. 40 Mb bundle makes sense... and very reasonably priced. Better than paying R2 per meg out of bundle.

I think the problem is not really the 40Meg bundle but the why it is being marketed:eek:

For a cellphone user wanting to do a quick check on emails, or downloading the odd ringtone/game/whatever or two, 40Mb should be more than enough.

With iBurst you are using your computer, not a cellphone, and a computer can process more data than a cellphone.

Expecting users to check their email headers only with this 40Mb bundle will still leave them nowhere - as the actual emails still need to be downloaded.

Also, some person not knowing about the 40Mb limit, may send selfsame person a couple of 5Mb attachments by mistake - thereby depleting the bundle in one fell swoop.

But, as stated previously, if it is used on a cellphone to check email headers and downloading the odd ringtone, then it's more than enough.

It depends on what you want to use it for.

For people who may use their cellphones, maybe, but certainly not for PC based users who use iBurst.

but I don't think it is targeted at PC users. At least I have never seen it promoted as such. I have seen Vodacom market the 500 Mb and upwards bundle at 3G and broadband users.

The lower usage bundles are there for those cellphone users who may want / need them. If you don't like the idea that there is a data bundle there for those Cellular users then call Vodacom customer care and complain.

How exactly would you go about using the 40MB Iburst cap with Iburst modem on your phone then?

I don't recall reading anything in the article about iBurst. I thought we were talking about Vodacom. I just went back to re-read the article, but can't get onto the MoneyWeb site. But if as you say it is being marketed to iburst users, then yes, I agree, that is stupid.

Another fine rip off

A company I was pretty harsh about surfing at work, they blocked flash, video, chat and social networking and most users were still averaging 10 - 15mb browsing per day.

Unfortunately they can advertise it as they do because there is no base limit. the ASA can do nothing about it.

can somebody post a link to where this is advertised? I skimmed the article pretty quickly, but I don't recall seeing a link.

Please guys, let's not make this a big thing - Id be imbaressed if someone outside of south africa saw this thread...

There must be advertising standards when dealing with broadband. Technically, iBurst could say "Broadband from just 50c a month!" and give you 1 MB cap. How is this any different to 40 megs for R49. It's just multiplication. The average joe has no cooking clue about megs and gigs and how much data internet surfing uses.

Oh I wish they would do that, I'd be signing contracts like no tommorow!

Why you ask? well, i'd be selling those R2000 Modems for cheap!

40mb

i can watch a 10min Youtube but mayb give up half way because of all the buffering but seriously i use like 100mb everyday i mean on my operamin data counter ive used 120mb and itz been like 0n m0nth. 40mb is for people who just read e-Mail and mxiT

I just don't get it. Service providers offer a package for a SET amount of money with a SET bandwidth cap (ie there are no surprises) and people complain?!! I don't understand. You need to have a range of packages to meet a range of needs. Not everyone wants to drive a ferrari or a landrover. Look on the roads - how many citi golfs are running around.

My point is that these low end packages DO suit a certain group. If users are not educated about what a MB is, then they might be in for a surprise but in reality, you don't get a something for nothing. So to think that for R49 you will get a HUGE cap is totally naive and frankly stupid. Do we want to be in a situation like the US where LEGISLATION protects the idiot in the street. If you are an idiot - you will suffer. For the rest of us, we are glad for the choice.

If you want 500MB or 5GB, get the appropriate package!

I cant believe that they can get away with this. Its ridiculous!

I use on average about 200GB per month! I use 40MB every time I blink my eye! They are crazy, and they are abusing people who don't know much about computers and internet!

you can download a whole episode of lost in about a year! wow!!!
