Hi all,

What second hand cars would you not recommend because of cost of service/repairs/reliability?

Thanks

Yeah, avoid the French cars and go Japanese or German. And by German, I mean Volkswagen.

Avoid a diesel, unless it still has motor-plan and warranty. What you score on fuel consumption, you'll lose with the shorter, more expensive services and intervals. And repairs on a diesel can be very costly.

It could be because Renault get Nissan to build their cars here in SA. I'm pretty sure Nissan put more care into their vehicles than Renault.

so why then is the sandero called the sandero here in ZA then, why not call it the nissan aprio like in mexico?

I mean the Renault brand isnt that well known for reliability outside of France?

Like already mentioned several times, stay away from Citroen, Renault and Peugeot. Also don't buy Audi, BMW or Mercedes if there's no motorplan. Toyota, Mazda and VW are pretty solid choices.

I have 2 Citroen C2's 2004,6 that my daughters drive bought for ~Rk50. Absolutely reliable, bar routine maintenance over 5 years... Rather have them driving those, than a hijack risk VW,Toyota etc. Just do your homework.

On the other hand, these 'don't buy French' attitudes suit me - I need to get my youngest a car this month, and I think it'll be another C2 in the stable...:)

No model that is marketed as "sporty", like an ST or GTI etc.

Just depends on how deep your pocket is. The pricing on parts for them can get pretty ridiculous

Servicing is affordable (if independent) and reliability is good.

For parts, I'd rather drive a car where the turbo might cost R30K to replace, but it never needs replacing than one where I actually have to replace it for R10K.

+1

These attitudes are what makes buying cars like Citroen quite a good deal 2nd hand.
Low demand causes high depreciation of what has evolved into very decent cars.

Any cheap second car. If it's cheap its cheap for a reason. Not worth the aches of rebuilding all the jippos and gerry rigs. That said if you take your betrothed to a parts shop they can give you the skinny on most of the hydraulic and aux quips. But if you buy a lemon you'll have a lemon :)

Don't be like ever "Kommen" D**s and go buy a 2009 135i cause you can pick it up for cheap and then pretend you are a baller or something, cause you have a fast car. Then complain endlessly about reliability when the thing is popping turbos and breaking clutches.. a performance car when they are older are a hazard.
