As the topic says. I know Java and C/C++, the holidays have become somewhat abit boring so i thought it would be a good idea to do some sort of project (programming related) to kill some time.

does anyone have any ideas? maybe previous projects you guys have done??

let me know :D tx

I was looking for the exact same thing. I've been on holiday since 4 Nov and it's getting boring quite quickly. Seems there is nowhere where someone can request a program to be written out of goodwill and boredom. Maybe set up a website like that? ;)

Yeah, I've been thinking of doing the same. Attempted a little game using free libs and C++, but got a little out of control, so I abandoned it.

Lots of freelance programming job websites... Just go bid to do the job for free :p

Been trying to get into freelance for fun, but I seem to lack the experience needed for most jobs.

why not build a iphone or ipod app? something us South Africans can use.

im actually waiting for my HTC Desire HD to be delivered, but apparently android has the worst SDK known to man, but maybe i should bite the bullet :S

If you know some java/c# check out xna game studio

Get yourself a Lego Mindstorm NXT and have some fun. Got myself one of them 3yrs back and ... um ... arrr .... heard its fun anyway. Wouldn't know as mine has been in its box since little Geek was born.

I enjoy playing arround with the google maps api and gps units.
otherwise rewriting simple games like pacman, digger, pong etc is a fun way to learn a graphics engine.

I do boring web applications and integration all day so its fun to change abit.

Actually, I've found the Android sdk to be very to use if you know java. It took me 1 day from never having touched it to put my first app on the market

Well, we at veepiz.com are looking for someone to create a crossplatform mobile application for the website. If you're up for it, we could even pay you something if it does the job.

how about open source contribution

^^ This ^^

There are a number of open source projects that are always looking for more developers. The nice thing about this kind of project is that you can jump in midway, help out where it makes sense, and jump out again once the code is handed over. Something like a plugin to an existing application would be ideal... it's small, easy to document and handover... and you don't leave ppl in the k@k if you decide to pull out, as it is an optional extra.
