Hi guys,

Random question;

I have this motherboard: http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=775i65GV and these are the CPU's that it supports: http://www.asrock.com/mb/cpu.asp?Model=775i65GV

Now;

Looking at say a Rectron price list; how do I know which of the following CPU's will work on this board?

Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core E5300 Processor - 2.60GHz, Socket 775, 2MB, 800MHz FSB, 45nm, x64 Support, 3 Year Warranty
Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core E5400 Processor - 2.70GHz, Socket 775, 2MB, 800MHz FSB, 45nm, x64 Support, 3 Year Warranty
Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core E6500 Processor - 2.93GHz, Socket 775, 2MB, 1066MHz FSB, 45nm, x64 Support, 3 Year Warranty
Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core E6600 Processor - 3.06GHz, Socket 775, 2MB, 1066MHz FSB, 45nm, x64 Support, 3 Year Warranty

Advise please?
Preferably, the person wants the E5300, but I'm not sure it will work on this board.

Thanks!

Obviously I thought that would be the answer, but having said that, this is a semi old board, the chips are new, I was thinking maybe the CPU's might not work on the board in question because the chips are new and would have to be one of the CPU's (on the support list) for it to work.

Being Asrock, they have probably added BIOS revisions to support more CPU's - and just haven't updated their "Supported CPU's" list.
I would hazzard a guess that the C2D processors SHOULD work fine.

You need to make sure that you get amotherboard with this
*Only supported with PCB version R1.04 or higher, and BIOS version P1.90 or higher.

It only supports old Pentium 4, Pentium D and old celeron CPU's. None of those will work, nor will any new Intel CPU.

Incorrect, that CPU support list is outdated. The product page clearly states you just need a new board revision with a certain bios (PCB version R1.04 or higher, and BIOS version P1.90 or higher.)

OK I remember that particular board, it was one of the only 865 motherboards to support Core 2 Duo. But the new 45nm CPU's are almost certainly NOT gonna work. Try get a 65nm Core 2 Duo, eg E6400, E6550 etc

Any reason why he/she needs to keep the current board? Budget I assume? Seems like its one of those cases where a full upgrade is required. And surely 45/65nm wont matter? Altough I admit I am completely lost as to whether it will make a difference. Surely its only 'the insides' of the chip that are different and so socket compatibility still stands?

Well I've had a motherboard which supported 65nm Core 2 Duo but not 45nm. It's not just an "insides" of chip issue as you say, because sometimes you need to update your BIOS to support new processors. So: 45nm might work, haven't been able to find any evidence on my search yet, but it might not. 65nm will definitely work!

edit: The fact that the latest BIOS was released on 9/12/2006 also makes me doubt it will support any 45nm "Wolfdale" chips. Just my 2c.
