Hi there !

What determines the speed of your line ( ie your package DSL 512 / 384 / 192 )

Is this based at the DSLAM or on the basis of your login name ?

My 512 line which always used to get 50KB/s - now gets no more than 25 KB/s on Telkom's local speed test.

It appears that the line has been downgraded to a slower offering for some unknown reason ( although I'm still being billed for the 512 service )

Can anyone shed any light on this ?

You've gotta open a ticket on that one, and quickly too.
As far as I know, that is done at the DSLAM at the exchange, and it's one of the reasons that they gave me for charging to downgrade (from 512 to 384 to 192). i.e. Someone has to drive to the DSLAM and change something there. But that's what teklom told me, so I dunno how true it is.

10 out 10 for Telkom's Support Staff

Its 10:24 am on Sunday ...

I've just had a Telkom techie come examine the exchange - turns out it was a faulty port ...

As much grief as Telkom causes us, their actual support staff on the ground are great. Where else are you going to get somebody to fix your service on a Sunday morning ( and if they had their way they would have been here on Saturday evening to sort it out ! )

This sort of message is encouraging since I am waiting to find out whether I can get ADSL - I have almost weekly problems with ISDN - things going wrong @ the exchange, so I hope it isn't a sign that the same sort of stuff will happen with ADSL (presumably the same exchange).

Praise deserved here to Telkom for sorting out mitchmagi.

It's been mentioned before but the people at Telscum who do the hard work [engineers, techies etc] are really good people but are paid absolutely nothing imho, while the Big-Cheeses like $izwe Nxasana couldn't give a rats ass about 'customer satisfaction' but are paid the most and are the ones that make big decisions [Price drops etc]

I've spoken to quite a couple of techies from Telkom, and most of them tell the same story. Where they used to be quite a few technicians for each area Telkom just started retrenching them a few years ago up to the point where they now end up having to service multiple areas. The pay was also drastically reduced so most of them are just too happy to work after hours/weekends to make ends meat.

They are imho about the only human assets telkom have left, and probably the most neglected, but still they are just about the only ones who keep the network alive, as support and management are SERIOUSLY useless.

One thing that dissapointed me is that the cabling the technician glued to our wall is starting to fall off after a few months, although this could also be due to the cheap equipment Telkom give their technicians. The guy had a corded gluegun with a 1m cable. Honestly, how do you work like that? He had to continuously climb up and down the ladder to heat up the gun again so he can glue another 30cm. As i saw this i got an extension cable to help him out but still, it's hard enough working against ceilings all day without having to worry about cabling all the time.

So a big up to the telkom techies...

 ... They don't deserve anything, afterall it's their equipment and we pay them for the services they render to us ... ... their response time in this case is indeed impressive but it shouldn't be commended as it is what is due to the end user. I don't have a problem giving credit where it's due ... when it comes to Telkom there's absolutely no way I'll ever give em praise, that would be accepting mediocrity.

Hello Mr Noble_Nanobot. I hear you.
I too am frustrated with the situation of our Monopoly, Telkom.
In essence we do not have anything to compare the service to, as Telkom is the only supplier of Fixed Lines in South Africa.
As a Moderator of these forums I have to be unbiased.

So a big up to the telkom techies...
Perhaps like Quik suggested, the Techie Chaps need an honourable mention and lets leave it like that.

I don't have a problem with applauding those that actually make the Telkom network actually work - give praise to those that deserve it.

I also don't have a problem telling Telkomonopoly's gargoylian management & R11mil/year_bonus echelons how I feel about them sucking my wallet & our country (not theirs == unpatriotic greedy money vampires) dry.
