Disclaimer:I'm from the enlightened crowd so know nothing about anything i.

A lady friend brought me her dead son's iPad and asked me how can she get into the thing.

1. She wrote a username and password down., but the thing needs digits?
2. She wants to sell it so wants to know what it's worth.
3. I'm busy with my tipple of choice and really don't have the energy to do research as to what model this is, etc.

Using my TV remote for acale:

The username and password is (hopefully) the icloud login which you will have to use to wipe the device and reset to factory.

Google will be your friend (how to reset a locked ipad)

I hope I'm misreading but you make it seem like the son is dead.
You're not.

The son was shot dead in her driveway, what I think, was 3 years ago. It's not something I readily bring up, for obvious reasons, during our conversations.

But she's a dear friend of mine...and I'm the IT guy. To my dismay, especially when it comes to these i-devices!

That iPad is very old just judging by its home button. Not worth anything unfortunately. Give it to a kid for YouTube.

Some doctors can use the old iPads for the discovery client liason app which still (fortunately) works on very old models.
I just sold one to a doctor. So maybe find a doctor friend who needs one, and wipe it and load the discovery app for them.
The discovery app allows them to look up a patient's medical history.

As far as i know OS 10.3 was the end for fourth gen iPads... so it's about 9 years old.
