What do you download ?

Ok, I guess all my persistant questioning is not gonna get any more addresses out of u guys ? I am planning to download Maya the Bee the second series tomorrow.

With only a 2gb account you're going to want to be careful with torrents. I'd consider a IS account with the 30gb local. At least then you have the local news server and local torrents.
 
@bwana: just purchased a 1gig prepaid account from webafrica, going to use it for searching newzleech.com. Thanks man it's a big time saver. Going to use this prepaid account specifically for searching the newsgroups because it only expires when the data is used and not at the end of the month, so it's going to last a while.

Not a bad idea that. A gb should last quite sometime doing it that way.

Anyway - seems most guys here are too embarresed to own up to what hey are downloading... Torrents, tsunamis, whatever - Seems we all download 30Gb worth of weather each month!

What I like most about this forum is that most guys have owned up to downloading the odd bit of Disney movie over time! If only we could now download the odd Disney movie without any caps of shaping! :D

Embarrassed or scared of getting caught? :D mostly tv series and the odd bit of porn for me. And no it's not illegal because I'm not distributing it or selling it to anyone and also I like watching my programs ad-free.

(Trying) to download @ 45feet/sec - oops! Have to wait 5 weeks to get ADSL working again.... Line down for the past 4 weeks! Was repremanded for being a bad bb user !

lol... I used to use my 3GB easily by just browsing and the occasional small download, nevermind torrents and newsgroups

So if I rip a HiFi off the back of the truck and just use it myself it's not illegal? Interesting perspective.

For the record, I have no time for the greedy Movie and Music Studios. I just don't believe in ripping anyone off. It just justifies their antics and makes everything more expensive for the people who do pay for things.

As he was referring to series primarily perhaps you could clarify who am I ripping off when I download say an episode of CSI which is broadcast free of charge in the states? Keep in mind I am also a dstv subscriber and will most likely watch it again when it is shown locally.

Let me paint a scenario:

1) The local supplier DSTV looses out on advertising revenue as companies will be less likely to pay for advertising on shows that have already been viewed by the majority of customers.
2) The studio will then loose business because DSTV refuses to pay for shows that have already been viewed by the majority of their customers and they don't get the advertising revenue to pay for the shows.
3) The show gets cancelled because the studio does not get enough money to pay for the production as they loose money that they would normally have received from around the world.

There are a lot of people who don't have DSTV and are still watching the shows so that also causes problems with the "I was going to get it anyway" idea. People are sharing Movies, Games and MP3's. Would these eventually have been shown on MNet or on the radio. Yes probably, but that does not mean that I have any more right to listen/watch them now. People have these massive MP3 collections. I don't see them buying CD's. They may not have purchased them anyway but that is not the point.

What about software? MS Office is being shared all over the show yet there is a perfectly good free alternative called OpenOffice. The more people that use OO, the better.

I have no time for the big studio's either. They grossly over charge for DVD's (This was already shown overseas through a study). The protection they put on DVD's etc only screws the people who buy the stuff around.

I am sick and tired of being ripped off here in South Africa by SK, Musica, Nu Metro and the like and because of this I now buy all my DVD's from Amazon. But I still buy them. The local importers add fat profits to everything they buy. Case in point: Why can I buy a song from Apple for R6 but Musica wants to charge me R10? Yahoo will let someone listen to as many songs as they want for $20 per month. But only in the States.

That said. If it is too expensive then I won't buy it. I don't have the "right" to watch it.

Again - I'm talking solely about television shows that are broadcast in the states.

There is little or no chance that a US show will be cancelled because of foreign markets (your point 3). Shows are produced by American studios for American viewers. Proof in point ABC is releasing shows on the internet within days of them being shown in the states.

Actually the fact that they're releasing their shows on the internet for free pretty much invalidates most of your arguments. They might be releasing them with US adverts but they wouldnt pertain to SA audiences anyway yet we're free to download them.

There is no difference between downloading a show and taping it (or recording it with a pvr) to watch later yet that is allowed.
