What do you guys use Mac OS and Linux for?

I use Linux to make coffee, and then I use a mac to clean the dogs kennel. Seriously though, I imagine we use our operating systems for the same reason you do. To run the hardware we use.

I use linux cause its free, prettier than vista, and more functional for my needs. Mac users make pr0n videos with their OS.. and other stuff, but you would have to ask them for the details.

well mac offers better video and editing options

although im not so sure its better than your average quadcore 4 gig raid setup but i dont have a clue

linux is for ppl who hate windows and are not willing to admit windows is actually pretty amazing

although linux for ppl who like to play around with different OS's

I mean doesn't one use different OS's for different purposes?

Well some of them are better at stuff. Since I am constantly working with linux servers (which are more popular than windows servers), and networking.. linux works for me.

I know Mac is ment to be a simple to use, pretty to look at OS that works real well with photoshop n stuff like that for the more graphically inclined amongst us.

And windows is for people who either need to game or who havent figured out that Mac and Linux are better than windows... but saying all of that. It really comes down to personal choice... cause with a bit of tweaking most of them can do what the other one does. Except mac.. its not even in contention for gaming.

so wizard how is linux good for corel draw photoshop?

what is it linux really does thats so amazing?

i think windows is more than likely the best OS due to the fact you can do everything linux and mac can do in one package and considering mac are using intel's cpu i would imagine they are no better than pc's :)
although maybe the mac OS is more suited for graphic intensive programs

I actually run Adobe Photoshop CS2 on my gutsy install... so dunno where ure coming from.

Why do I prefer my linux install over my windows install? First.. its prettier (compiz-fusion), its more customizable.... and one of the most important things.. I DONT HAVE TO FORMAT EVERY 6 MONTHS TO KEEP TOP PERFORMANCE GOING.

Seriously, Windows has cruddy file systems. My linux install can do everything my windows instal can do.. except one thing. While I got battlefield running on Cedega/Linux.. when I joined a ranked server punk buster pwned me. For that single reason.. I still have windows.

yea can linux can any games?

dont you also have to pay for cedega every month which sorta sucks if you ask me

really what about corel draw? how does photoshop run as well as windows or mac runs it?

yea the formatting every 6 months does suck i'll admit

Same here. KDE treats remote files as local files. To edit a file on a server somewhere I just need to open the file in an editor, no ftp down -> edit -> ftp up. I think that's pretty cool. :)

But whatever works for you. I don't see myself ever returning to windows, when you've used linux for a while windows looks really inflexible and boring. And I'm heterosexual so obviously Mac is right out.

killa, I don't use my computer for games, thats what a playstation/wii is for. (That was true when I used windows too.) The fact that linux gaming is limited makes no difference to me.

I have no idea about corel. Ive never used the application as its not my fortee, but I imagine it would run on a virtual machine pretty easly though.

Yes you pay $5 for cedega. I only paid it once, and then if there is an update that includes a game I am playing... I pay for it again. I dont mind paying to get battlfield2 running... I really dont. Though I do see some wine users have managed to get batlefield2 running on vanilla wine.

Cedega runs all the games I play.

My biggest problem with the formats came to silly little things, like having to backup bookmarks, accounts, a gazilion little settings and so on. My linux desktop doesnt depreciate over time so since my first install of Dapper Drake... I havent had to format once :D It works for me.

Its not only about what it can do.. its what it doesn’t do that also deserves some credit :D

I use both Arch Linux and Windows XP Home coz they both rock.

I'll never get rid of Windows because of gaming. Even though linux can do many games via cedega its still a pain in the a$$ to get it to work.

Linux is generally for the more geeky folk that enjoy knowing stuff as some tasks that are quite basic and easy in Windows can take a while to get used to in linux. Not because its hard but because its different.

I disagree, I would easily swop Windows for Linux as my main OS but I need windows for my work, I don't hate Windows, just that Microsoft are too focused on keeping there Empire intact rather than product development(efficiently not by hiring people on a politically correct basis).

I remember how good Windows 2000 was(those were the good days) it's just been downhill since then.

*nix = geek
Windoze = Regular every day person
Mac OS = Girls and homo *cough* I mean designers and simpletons

Clearly you are a *cough* . . . . ?

Seriously - never understood why people have to disparage other people's choice of operating systems. Different horses for different courses. If it works for you and you're productive using it then bonus, otherwise why not try something different. :)

Hehe, I had to throw that down. It is the age old cliche :D

I must say though that the Leopard Time Machine thingie and a few other things do look really nice

I tease Mac users...well, cause my humour would be lost on windows users :D but bwana`s analogy with the horses is about right.

If you are a gamer Linux is not going to be for you. If you use your computer for internet, video watching, using it for office rekated tasks then it rocks. All the software for free. And for a normal user it really ticks all the boxes. Linux I think really suffers when you have to do stuff that has a professional slant to it. because most apps are open source you will find the real professional software has not been developed. But I am happy with it. Because I like to play the odd game, I keep my XP around. Though it is a 10GB partition for the actual OS and another 30GB partition for the games. The rest of my 250GB is basically Linux orientated.
