What do you guys use Mac OS and Linux for?

Linux: Stability. (Laptop)
Windows -Server 2003: Gaming (Main Rig)
Use both systems to code/deisgn
Tri Booted for the fun of it -Linux/Windows/Leopard

Leopard is the new Vista lol
 
i'd say..

linux for programming stuff occasionally

MacOs seems to be for same as above sometimes i see people do.. as well as some of their software they provide really is pretty cool.. I think its one of those live in scenario's of branding, if u build o/s + hardware and have a few other devices that are successfully sold seperately they whole branding thing comes across more easily than windows/microsoft. I'm sure bill gates wishes he made cpu's/intel

windows for uhm.. uhm.. basically stuff that can't work anywhere else with as much ease
e.g. office(altho i am taking a liking to google office stuff :D)
uhm and a few proprietary software that won't work on linux, specific to things
.. basically .. since i don't play games much, there is no real reason other than ease of interoperability and even then its not really true.
 
I use my mac, and OSX Leopard for the exact same things I use my Thinkpad and Vista for. The mac seems to just do it that much better, until you start using the Microsoft programs. Lucky for me, I don't need to use them - MSN:mac is useless, but a great alternative Adium is available. iWork '08 blows Office (for windows and Mac) out of the park. When I need windows compatablitly, I can always use Neooffice. I will give Office 2008 for mac a chance when it arrives, but I am very unimpressed with Office 2004 - especially comparing it to how everything else works on a mac.
 
If you want a stable OS then OSX (Apple) is for you, personally I've tried Ubuntu and all the rest of the Linux distros and I always had issues with the PC hanging ect. (maybe I just configured it wrong, dont know and my hacking skills to try to get it to work were not up to scratch, I cant modify kernels)

So I got myself a Mac, the OS is built for the machine and so I dont have issues with drivers not recognizing this or that, it just frikken works.

For example, I have an old Bafo external case from 2001, I plugged it into my MacBook and it worked immediately, no driver downloads, nothing.
 
With Vista the formatting every 6 months is a thing of the past. I haven't formatted since Jan of this year when I installed Vista.

Vista can be used for games, it just depends how old your games are. Some games will run slower than they did on XP but that is a given as OpenGL is now a thing of the past and Vista is ushering in the era of sexy looking DX 10 games.
 
This is not really a debate that will get anywhere, ever.

Best answer to the original question would be to operate the system in question.

In my office we use windows for office (email, internet, word processing, spreadsheets etc etc) plus some professional tasks(editing, photoshop, other video work). And we use Mac for professional tasks (editing, photoshop).

And I run a variety of Linux installs on old hardware for Firewalls and mailservers etc. Easy to maintain and free.

If you start looking beyond the practical reasons, you can debate for the rest of your life.

Windoze = Regular everyday sheep who doesn't know any better or
can't care for the occasional Windoze screw up.
Mac OS = People who want their system to work, so that they can do their work, shut it down and do other non-computer things.
Linux = People who want to customise their system with the stability
of the Unix based Mac OSX but with fewer commercial software options.

oh great, another OS war, I use MS-DOS and are more l33ter than 4ll 0f y0u.

HelloThere, go read up on each of the OS's find the one that works for you in terms iof look, usabily and compatibility..and of course amount of errors per week/month/year, like bwana said, different hosses for different courses.

Wikipedia would be useful in this case, I bet plenty of Fanboys are there updating info on their favourite OS's and making sure no edits in anything bad...
