What does it take to host MyBroadband?

Seriously, though - I run an SME and even we wouldn't think of putting together a server with less than 64gig RAM, and at least 2 CPUs (32gig for 2CPUs is pushing it), and I have never considered that a "high-end server". The specs might look high-end for someone that's just worked with gaming PCs, but for someone who's spent some time in a datacentre, this is about the bare minimum server you'd want to get.

Agreed. Used to routinely install servers at least twice the size of those, and those were classified as standard spec...

Well, at the end of the day, myBB is really just a glorified blog with a large forums attached to it. Why spend money when the requirements don't need it?
 
While I agree that is a very entry level server configuration it's just a forum. I doubt there are even any other SA forums that require more than a VPS. At the end of the day the site performs really well...

I'd like to know how much data that hosting eats through in a month :)

Jip mentioned in the article that they keep it is simple as possible...
You don't need much more then they have though, MyBB stock standard HA setup has better uptime then most ISPs

I am going to say a ***** load, if you look at every Hetzner article RE bandwidth increases you will always see RPM comment about less over usage for myBB

edit: everyone knows there are servers with 256GB RAM, some guys have HP blades with 1TB of RAM. I bet non of them have a forum on them that requires 32GB of RAM? The MyBB servers are small in comparison to what some environments have but it is giant compared to other blogs and forums

lol you don't know much about hosting/advertising business do you?

MyBB gets millions of visits a month, that requires dedicated hardware (even though the spec is low, it is dedicated to a blog with a forum). Other ISPs will host hundreds if not thousands of websites on the same hardware....

Due to all of these visits, RPM can run a business off the revenue generated from ads sales. Due to the website generating an income one would require a HA cluster to ensure the site stays up

Server parts are significantly more expensive than gamer parts. 64k does sound overpriced, although you could probably inflate it to that buying from Dell/IBM with a fat support contract. The machines we use (buy componentized) - proper Intel server solutions with enterprise-class SSD's and good hardware RAID (although software RAID's pretty much caught up) cost around half that, and we still get 3+ year warrantees and 1-day response from Intel on any issues, although it's not on-site support. But we maintain 2 entire racks and have hardware/networking staff, so prefer to handle that part ourselves.

Edit: in reality, it's more likely they're using the managed solutions, the R2395 server + SSD addon specs pretty much line up with the article. 6TB of bandwidth x however many servers there are should be enough to run the site.
