What does it take to host MyBroadband?

My PC is mainly server hardware...

2x Xeon E5645
EVGA Classified SR-2 (there are server equivalents which cost around the same if not less than the SR-2 did with onboard graphics)
48 GB (12x 4 GB) ECC Registered RAM
2x Intel 320 Series 120 GB SSD (avoided SandForce)
8 TB worth of storage, mainly WD RE drives
Be Quiet Dark Power Pro 1200W PSU (a 600w PSU would suffice without graphics cards, probably something from Zippy/EMACS or similar)
Corsair Obsidian 800D (for the cost you can get a 4U chassis)

For less than R64k I also got my three Radeon HD 7950s, a GTX 580, a Sound Blaster Zx, Areca ARC-1231ML RAID controller...

MyBB gets millions of visits a month, that requires dedicated hardware (even though the spec is low, it is dedicated to a blog with a forum). Other ISPs will host hundreds if not thousands of websites on the same hardware....

Due to all of these visits, RPM can run a business off the revenue generated from ads sales. Due to the website generating an income one would require a HA cluster to ensure the site stays up

And you didn't understand my post.

There are comments about how low spec (ram) the site runs on - it runs just fine so why spend money on high specs. myBB is not doing million of complex processes a day, it's mostly simple CRUD stuff.
 
Anyone notice that the 64k comment was made by someone who, two posts earlier said 'sounds expensive'. He doesn't actually know what the Mybroadband servers cost. i would venture to say they were less than 10 grand per machine, so MAYBE 64k for the lot.

I wonder what the cost of hosting a similar system on Amazon would cost. I'd guess much less than 64K. I'd even throw a number of less than 10K a month for the whole lot (of course, more details are needed to compare the two)

Well, since the whole "local cap" vs "international cap" thing has really fallen away, I don't see need for hosting in South Africa anymore, especially since websites aren't latency dependent (like streaming or gaming).

Although, it can prevent user problems when international lines go down (and ISPs don't have alternatives) but that is becoming less and less of a concern.

The one very strong side is that myBB should be getting some good solid support from these guys, where amazon's support might not be as dedicated. (but then again, amazon services rarely fail and are fairly easy to self manage)

No, you could spend R64k on a machine like that with Dell and a fat support contract. But you're right, that 64k was just pulled out the air. You'd think a site my mybb would be knowledgeable enough to not go for the most expensive option available, at full price (you just have to say "hello" to Dell to get 10%-15% discount).
 
I am sure RPM gets good value as they have all of the industry falling over them to try to get their business.

The performance is what one experiences - seems great to me.

The availability is what we can't really see without the design detail. I doubt Hetzner would tolerate the risk of failure of mybb on their watch as the publicity would really hurt them
