What does network operator time do?

When one sets the network operator time option to auto-update (Nokia N80, probably others) what exactly is supposed to happen?

What doesn't happen is that the phone's time is changed!
 
There was a discussion about this earlier, the network operators don't want to implement it as it'll cost to much with little benefit.

But, yeah - it's meant to keep your cell time synched to the network.
 
i switched it on a while ago and forgot about it.

a few months later, I couldn't figure out why the time on my phone kept on changing. I changed the setting to prompt me before updating and it turns out there was a tower in the Claremont area that kept updating my time to the incorrect time. not always, but about once a week.

after that episode I will not use the feature again. this was on MTN.
