It's an indicator to show that the person has set a message. Hover your mouse over it. You can also click on it to see the full message. e.g. When Lync is integrated with Outlook and the person sets an out-of-office message, it will display there.

Soooo Microsoft. Difficult to escape their nicely integrated apps
