What Exactly Is Google Hangouts?

It's just one of those apps I never really understood what it exactly it does. Is it a chat app? Does it replace the messaging/sms app?

It's what Google Talk used to be and more.
 
They took GTalk, ****ed it up and shoved it into Chrome.

Luckily there are proper desktop clients out there like Pidgin because that Chrome **** is seriously ****ed up horse ****!!

Haha. The hangouts chrome app that lives unobtrusively in my menu bar? I love it! :D

This is the most accurate description for the horrible piece of **** called Google Hangouts. Fortunately I still have GTalk installed.
 
Works awesomely on my phone. On PC I chat from inside gmail.


So don't really any problem with it.

Yep. And even if they didn't it is such a schlep logging onto your gmail to copy paste text.

Regardless, for work the default hangouts suck and a third party client should be used.
 
I loathe Hangouts. Google Talk was a really cool little client that was lightweight, unobtrusive and prioritised content over design. Hangouts is this tone-deaf hybrid social networking monstrosity that is constantly broken on desktop with an ill-conceived 'cards' design that amounts to way too much white space. Problem is all my chats are on hangouts so I'm a bit stuck. Pleugh.

Use the chat from inside Gmail. Much simpler.

Hangouts on my phone, chat inside gmail. phone gives me notifications.

That's just admitting that desktop Hangouts is crap and broken. It does work but it's a hack. Phone and tablet hangouts is fine though I admit.

Here is another disclosure. I have never used this desktop hangouts thing :)
