If I wanted to chat to youI'd use whatsapp or BBM. If I wanted to mail you, I'd use gmail.

Same. GTalk/Hangouts generally means work. WhatsApp and the like for anything else

+2 one app for sms/hangout messages. The desktop client is also great (don't have to keep a Gmail tab open). For work/personal just mute the people you want to ignore lol.

None of those are IM clients. That was meant to be the whole point of Hangouts originally. Now it's mutated for the worse due to Google's Facebook jealousy.

Hangouts is much better than Whatsapp if you use it daily on your desktop and phone.

I use it a lot and it is perfect for my needs.

Another irritating thing about hangouts (not sure if this has changed since the last time I used it) is that when you type in a contact's name it searches the whole of Google+ and random people's names appear in the result. Would be nice if the search/filter was restricted to your contacts/circles. This possible yet?
