What fires Firefox

Nice article. Just a minor correction though - it's not "DownloadThemAll", it's "DownThemAll!" ;) Although, if you Google the former, you will still find it.

Add-ons I cannot live without:
* Adblock Plus
* Mouse Gestures Redox (I depend on it quite a bit! You're either a keyboard shortcut guy or a mouse gesture guy, I suppose I'm a bit of both)
* Tab Mix Plus
* WebMail Notifier (I use GMail so this add-on comes in handy)
* DragDropUpload (allows you to drag-n-drop attachments into GMail emails without having to browse through the folders on your h/drive to find the file)

Plugins: Free Download Manager (integrates with FDM app) and LogMeIn to sign in to remote PC's via the internet on secure line

Secondary add-ons I sometimes use:
Afrikaans dictionary
English dictionary
CSS Viewer

There's a lot of other (bandwidth hungry) add-ons I could use but due to high bandwidth cost in SA there's just no point.

Yay!!!!!!!! Another Firefox article! :D

Watch out... Slappy is gonna come in here and gripe at us! ;)

Hah, you put AdBlock Plus up. It's a good addon but yeah, I feel sorry for web masters who depend on it (the advertisements).

has anyone got the pcbug addon, i am interested to know if it works or not

Many of us who use it... exclude certain pages from Adblock Plus out of principle.

MyBroadBand.co.za should be excluded by default so that it DOES show the ads here.

I prefer to only give support to those websites that I trust and who I want to enable so that I can see their ads. That is usually the websites that I visit the most. It's my money (in the sense that I am paying for the bandwidth), so I get to decide who gets my money.

Yes, I do the same with my fav sites, just in case I want to see their advertising, but at least it's my choice. I exclude all https sites as a rule just in case they have popups and ad info that specifically relate to what I'm doing on that site.

seymour7, yes anyone running a site that relies on ad sales will hate Ad blockers since it obviously affects their income, but that's life. :) I'm just glad ad blockers give me the choice as a consumer not to look at ads. Makes the sites load so much faster as well.

And some sites just looks horrible with all the ads scattered all over and difficult to
navigate quickly. AdBlock Plus must be one of the best plugins for Firefox ever.

Adblock is great. I also love downloadthemall. Showpicture is great because I usually disable pictures to save on bandwidth and this plugin lets you view a particular picture or all pictures on a page (unlike Firefox's default option which loads just one picture in a new page). Flashblock is also great since most flash is advertising anyway.

FireFTP
Better Gmail 2
Keyconfig (allows you to create canonize rules (amongst other shortcuts), great since browser don't come with a canonize rule for .co.za)
Web Developer & Firebug (great for developers)

If you're a web developer, Firebug will change your life :)

Others...

Essential: CS Lite, BugMeNot, Distrust, FireFTP, IE View Lite (prefer it to IE Tabs)

Nice: Speed Dial, Tiny Menu (I like my screen space :) ), FEBE, Fire Gestures, Live Click

Cute: Flagfox , Locationbar2, Fission, Server Spy

Another cool one is the extended info bar and also undo close tabs addon's. Just makes a difference just lookout for extended info bar it can sometimes make FF crash or let it run really slow but other than that its nice to have :D.

Scrapbook is great - better than bookmarks for saving useful info because the site is stored on your computer and cannot disappear, and much better than just saving web pages and trying to remember where you saved them because everything is indexed in a sidebar. Also makes it easy to delete the parts of the pages you don't want (such as ads) and combine multipage articles into one page.

I prefer Flashblock to Adblock - Flash is the real bandwidth hungry stuff, and that way I am still supporting sites that use ads in compact format (e.g. google ads).

50 Firefox Add-Ons to Achieve Private and Secure Web Surfing

Firefox is generally considered a secure web browser, but if you’re interested in keeping your activity on certain websites private or giving yourself extra protection against phishing, hackers and viruses, you may want to consider beefing up your Firefox’s security in general. Thankfully, there are lots of options available that make achieving privacy and security online as easy as downloading a simple add-on or application that was designed just for Firefox users. Here are some of our favorites.

Here are some tips I've found on using Firefox that even without add-ons makes it my first choice :

1. To duplicate tabs press Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) while dragging a tab to create a duplicate of the dragged tab including its history.
2. To move tabs to another window just drag a tab and drop it on another window to move it. If the dragged tab is the last one in its window, it will be closed.
3. To resize the search bar you can drag the handler between them (invisible on Windows and Linux) to resize it.
4. To add keyword search select Manage Search Engines… in the search engines menu to open the Search Engines Manager, select a search engine, press Edit Keyword… and enter a few characters to define one. Now you can enter the keyword followed by your search terms in the location bar to search with that plugin.
5. For discontinuous selections make a selection with the mouse, press Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) and make additional selections to copy or print just what you want.
6. For integrated add-ons there is no need to visit Mozilla Add-ons because Firefox 3 brings it to you directly from the Add-ons Manager new Get Add-ons page: search, find and install with a single click.
8. To check your crashes enter about:crashes in the location bar to get a list of crashes submitted by Breakpad (Mozilla’s crash reporter). Click on a crash report to get details provided by Socorro, Mozilla’s crash reports server.

Another tip I found with using AdBlock is keeping the AdBlock icon in your toolbar, then you just drop & drag the offensive ad to the icon and its gone.
