My international speeds are really bad. Sometimes I must wait about 2 minutes for one page to download.

I thought I will report it to the data helpdesk.

Phoned 155.

I could hear the call was transferred, but I hold for about 20 minutes and listened to all kinds of Vodacom promotions. Finally I explained the problem to an operator and all he could say "Please hold for the data helpdesk". OK, got transferred, and had to listen to 110 options. Pressed "0", and after that I just got an engage tone.

Just wasted 20 minutes (and money) for nothing, this is totally unacceptable.

So what number must I phone to get help?

I think you got caught in a failure that affected all the call desks. They should be up now, but it's not good holding on for such a long time and then to lose the call. Freaks one out...

What pages are you battling with? I can test for you.

What's your throughput to the Telkom speed test? (to check local portion)

Can you give me your current DNS server IP? (to check international path)

Hi V3g

Thanks for helping again

My problem is with international sites. But it is no consistent. Sometimes it is very slow (the slowness will last for about 2 hours, and then it is better again). I literally wait for 1 or 2 minutes for a simple html page to download.

This has been going on now for the last 2 weeks.

Did not do a telkom test as my problem is with international sites.

My DNS server IP is:

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 168.210.2.2
196.14.239.2
(This is from the ipconfig /all command)

Good idea, love it when you guys get creative :)

You could also put your data card in the old phone and call via that.

Did not know I can phone with my Datacard SIM, will try next time.

Any idea what I can do to solve my actual problem?

As part of the load balancing you'll get assigned (at connect time) to one or the other network. There is no way to force a specific connection.

You can always disconnect and reconnect to see if you end up on the other network. Not to sure if it'll make a difference. Might, depending on the site you're trying to access.

OK, but which one is the best to use?

It is not the sites I'm visiting, as then I connect with my landline I have no problem. Also it seems to be better with GPRS.

PS. I'm on the internetvpn APN

no no :), just use the ip/hostname of the server you're trying to get to internationally, something like this:
Code:
pathping ip_or_hostname_here

Hmmm...., my post was actualy for V3G:p

Will post some tracert's when I have the problem again

Can't make a call on which one, will depend on load at that point in time.

GPRS and 3G use the same data network, so if you're seeing an improvement on GPRS it's either coincidental that the site is faster when you're on GPRS or there's something wrong with your 3G (radio) connection.

Try the local test to check between GPRS and 3G.

International sites are difficult to judge in terms of sheer throughput as so many elements affect the speed you see.

Try this test: http://www.internetfrog.com/mypc/speedtest/

Whenever you do also note your DNS settings. You have two possible paths into the Internet, one via IS and one via SAIX.

168.210.2.2 & 196.14.239.2 shows you're on IS.

Could this explain why sometimes international pings are in excess of 1000 ms and other times around 600 ms?
