How old is your Life?
Any suggestions?
Where to buy?

Must haves:
HDMI
Good price

Built in HDD is not important.

Any comments on the Mede8er MED450X2?
R1,810 at TakeAlot

Im using the MED500X2 ...no complaints there... I tried the AC Ryan Veleo last week, could be very promising but not a straight forward media player (also there is a funky batch that is stuffed - lucky me I got one).

I dont have a Hard drive in my Mede8er.... I use a NAS Server for storage.

I got the older med500X with internal HDD 750GB. Was pricey at around R2500, so I did have high expectations.

What I liked:
Plays almost anything you throw at it - no fuss. Was exactly what I wanted in that regard.
Stylish enough to sit next to my amp.
Has wifi ( if you buy the dongle at an extra R300, which I did)

What I didn't/dont like:
Remote needs to be pointed at a very precise spot for input to be recognised.
Wifi dongle pretty useless as transfer speeds are very slow. Ya, I got the n wifi router.
Original firmware interface very basic - reminds me of dos or linux. Waaay outta date.
Fortunately, they released a newer firmware not long after I bought it. Unfortunately it was/is very buggy...eg screensaver kicks in even if disabled, only way to get rid of it is to go into the set-up menu.
They then released the new mede8er and stated that they were no longer going to support the older models. I understand this, but FFS 1st fix the current buggy software before alienating your existing customers?
Other small things like can't view photos in diff folder without inadvertently switching off the background music.

Would I buy another one? No, but I will hang onto the current one until frustration gets the better of me, then I will toss it.

If you are considering one of these, then maybe 1st have a look what the customers are saying about it on their forum .

Using a PlayonHD

Awesome player, no problems at all with it

I are using a mercer HD media player. but with all the format updates im having some issues. so get something that updates easily.

The built-in wireless is a bit more R1,299. Do you need to be connected to the internet to use this media player?

Nope, only if you want to use the online features (Facebook, Netflix etc.). Firmware updates can be downloaded to a flash disk and loaded onto the media player. Are you looking at the one on Takealot for ~R1,000? Because it does have built-in wireless.

It doesn't come with a hard drive though, but works great if you have a NAS or by attaching an external HD.

What is the difference between that Acer for R699.00 and the more expensive players?

Custom Build it and run XBMC/Plex.
Screw these lousy companies abandoning support for their own firmware/products!

This acryan and medit8er are micky-mouse media players, even an AppleTV is better.

QFT

I've paid enough school fees with a couple of media players before. Never again. Either HTPC or server with front-end and XBMC/Plex.

I've got the Compro NMC 950 for just under a year now and so far no issues.Much easier to navigate than the PlayonHD.
