.... six years ago I was told that the majority of South Africans are under the age of 21, recent news says now that the majority of the country is now under the age of 18, population growth hasn't been that high, Are people in their 20s still dieing of AIDS?

I heard the other day that South Africa is the only economy in the world that is growing, Because our GDP index is better than USA and the rest of the world, The other countries are experience slow growth. According to another study there was kind of a "medicine" that South Africa developed to slow the procedure down of having Aids - thus improving longevity. (As I understand it.)

My experience tells me that even during the height of the AIDS epidemic it was mainly people in their 30s and 40s that were dying

a company i use to work for had people come in anually & talk to us/give a workshop on HIV/AIDS.

One of those people said that it is projected that there would be a generation gap in about 15-20 years. & with this the guy said that they don't mean there wont be any people in that group but rather just so few that in the greater numbers they will be lost & far & few between.

In my personal non-medical opinion it will be an epidemic until there are less than 1000 people in SA with it.

If people can be a bit more careful then the nymbers can with time drop below 5%, but that will be a long time from now. & that would already be a lit better.

There's an official census happening this year. We should be able to see if there are any anomalies in the population distribution statistics. From what I have seen is that the general population is growing again after stagnating for a while.

You are right about the non medical opinion. An epidemic occurs when new cases of a certain disease, in a given human population, and during a given period, substantially exceed what is expected based on recent experience. From the latest statistics the rates of new infections has dropped significantly and so has the number of deaths. That is corroborated by the fact that the number of people living with the virus has stayed stable.

Without seeing the sources it is impossible to say. Could even be that the majority were below 18 then too, but that particular researcher had divided at 21.

Why do you think the anc has been fighting to make the voting age 16?

Life expectancy in SA is 45.

So its not hard to believe. But like Noxi said. Depends on who is diong the counting. You should wait for the Census for more accurate results.
And yes people in their 20s are still dying of HIV.

This from the most recent study by the SAIRR. I suppose that is the official figure as it stands.

Soz.

Still makes you middle aged when you hit your 20s :D

Yep...at 35 I should be going through the midlife crisis but for some reason I missed out on the extramarital affairs, andropause, etc. I'm now well into my old age...:o

I think I read on Wikipedia our population growth is at 0.5% or something ridiculous like that. If we want our economy to grow quicker, people will need the majority to live till they about 30-40... that way they can be useful until they kick the bucket and die from TB.
