A question for you guys.

I don't normally follow 3G and cellphone companies and the like but I need some information.

I have tried looking it up on the net but it is harder to find than I had anticipated, though that could just be because it is Friday :D

Anyway my question is: What does Vodacom use for international connectivity? SEACOM?...SAT3?

In other words are they going to feel the effects of the recent cable break as some ISPs seem to still be experiencing high latency and the like.

Anyone with any insights please feel free to let me know. Thanks.

SAT3 primary and Seacom for redundancy. They also have satellite links for redundancy which will hopefully scale down in favour of more Seacom cable or the other undersea cable Vodacom have put money into which aims to complete in a year or so (can't recall the name now).

Two empty baked bean tins and a large ball of string as far as voice and data quality goes.

WACS = 3.84 Tbps("at least")

currently our total capacity is around 0.2 Tbps

Astounding how they will sell all that bandwidth at R200 per GB (don't mention R2 MB)

i think that 2011 should bring 100 fold increase in bandwidth. i hope that the prices follow with a 100 fold decrease in prices too.

Look at it this way...if the cable was owned by Vodacom...the 3.84Tbps cable can transfer 480GB's per second. So theoretically Vodacom can make R289x480=R138720...PER SECOND at 1:1 contention ratio :)

The cable will be used by, amongst others:

Telkom
Vodacom
MTN
Tata Communications (Neotel)
Broadband Infraco
Cable & Wireless
Portugal Telecoms
Telecom Namibia
Togo Telecom
Angola Telecom
Sotelco (U.S.)

Vodacom's 3G network is extremely reliable and fast. You must be in the middle of the Karoo.

Often, also north of the Pilanesberg and near Messina Platinum mine. Data has to be sent at gprs speeds.

Also voice calls to my brother in Aus are nowhere near the quality of the Telkom :spit: calls

Nelspruit is a hell of a long way from the Karoo, and here it SUX more often than not...

I'm in Nelspruit too... I get great 3G performance. Strangely though, I get horrible voice call signals and signal bars. I live about 3km from Steiltes, the out of town direction.
