Don't take my word for it, but from the specs it seems any model will work.

Our iPhone 5 model here in SA is A1429 GSM and that supports LTE bands 1,3,5. This is the same model as

From the specs it seems that all the models support our GSM and LTE bands we use here, but I am not certain.

The UK is getting Model A1457 so that is probably the model we will get here.

5s for SA

Seems i don't have a choice as the only model you can get unlocked is
Model A1533 (GSM)

The A1533 (GSM) should work fine.

Quote from Apple Store: "When you travel internationally, you can use a nano-SIM card for iPhone 5s from a local GSM carrier."

It also has LTE bands 1,3 and 5 so will work here as well.

According to MacRumours the US does not have unlocked simfree stock yet, only network phones.

Last year it was December before US Apple Stores sold unlocked iPhone 5 handsets.

The T-Mobile phone you buy from Apple's online store is unlocked, but the T-Mobile version from the carrier itself or other 3rd party resellers are networked locked.

iPhone 5s - model A1533 (gsm)

Hi - got my hands on a black 32gb iPhone 5s - model A1533 GSM.

Currently running on Vodacom - '4G' (LTE) and 3G working perfectly as well as all the other functions...

Thought I'd throw in my 5 cents...

Correct.

That's what Apple wants you to believe. Essentially all phones are unlocked, they're just packed with different carrier sim cards according to that network's signal bands. Once you buy the phone, they will activate the sim and lock you into the network.

So just make sure you pay full price for the phone, don't buy it on contract (obviously), and buy it from an Apple store, not from a network store.

I bought the same phone as DemonSplicer below from an Apple store in California, the guy at the store told me they were sold out of unlocked T-mobile phones, as they get about 2-3 units per week. I asked for any phone as long as it is the A1533 model, it seems to fit our Vodacom bands the best. He gave me an At&T phone, and told me that it's locked to AT&T and cannot be used with any other sim card or outside of the US. I bought the phone anyway (cash) and told the guy he knows that the phone is unlocked, they're just not allowed to let the public know. He sort of admitted if afterwards.

So buy any phone you want to fit your service provider, just make sure you buy it from an Apple store directly and not a reseller, and don't turn on the phone or register it with the original sim in the phone.
