So sharepoint sucks and all. What are the alternatives?

SharePoint doesn't suck. It just tends to be used improperly in a lot of the implementations I've seen. It's primarily an enterprise content management solution with modular components that enable it to scale out to fit a lot of different purposes such as intranet and extranet sites, bulletin boards and so on. But it remains at core a powerful document repository, and if you're missing that point and trying to use it as a CMS you're going to end up hating it.

Alfresco is pretty impressive and I see is one of the alternatives on Kripstoe's link. It is a commercial open source project and the community edition is usefully feature rich.
