Heya.

What does ADSL Self Install entail ?? (explain plz)

And what is the difference between Self-install and the normal routine??

Is there a cost difference??

(Telkom must still come and install the ADSL line at my house??)

Self install just sounds a bit dodgy..

Self -Install is setting up the modem and drivers and POTS filters yourself. If you took out a contract with Telkom to get the free modem etc then you would get the kit and install it yourself. If they do it, they come to your house and put an extension line to the pc and plug the modem in and setup the connection.

I've just ordered DSL for my company and am doing the install myself as I have done countless times before. They aren't charging me (so I am told by Spermcount consultant).

the R440 that Telskum ask for adsl installation.. does that include "setting up the modem and drivers and POTS filters"

Apparently. I personally have never had a teklom techie installing my drivers and have never had adsl installed by a techie at my premises.

R440 => Techie comes to your place, plugs in filters at the various points on the same line used for phones etc(assumng you have 2 or less since kit i think comes with only 2) and then unwraps your new telkom router, plugs it in etc and checks it with his laptop that it can connect to Telkom site etc. and does a few tests + records/reports line specs attained

After that,if it conforms to spec sheet, its upto you to put in your isp's details and then he plugs it into your pc. He can perhaps advise on set up of pc if required but usually don't touch your pc since else they have to take resp. if something is breaks etc or network setups etc

ahhh okay. i thought they come and put in a special box or connector for your modem. like with ISDN.. (i had ISDN a year and half ago)

The existing telephone line and ADSL line are one and the same. No equipment is needed to make it an ADSL line other than a modem/router to make it functional. Hence the irate people on this forum and elsewhere infuriated about SpermCount charging twice for the same line.

Also take note that if you do a self-install you are going to get your line quicker.

WAY quicker. I got my line in like 2 weeks after i ordered it.

Well, I'm going to Jozi in just under 3 weeks so I hope they get their act together before then. :)

well exchange side there is a change, they run you wires to the dslam etc.

Also if you have a sucky connection at your pole, street box, joints etc it could show up when you use adsl(while not causing alot of problems with normal telephone service). So the advantage is the techie has to sort it out and will attempt to locate problem. When problems occur with self-install they have to come out and basically check where the fault is.

But yeah, self-install should be fine for the majority of semi-competant to even novice pc users(remember you can phone for assistance tho it depends on how patient the person you get thru to is) and saves you time, there are only a few techies per area :/ , and money.

It still costs the same though??? if i do a Self-install ?? They do give instructions as how to do the whole shebang ??

I was told today that there would be no line installation charge. I will have to wait and see if they are going to charge. It's always been free to self install before 1st August. Now they have a R245 charge showing on their website. Still cheaper if it is going to be charged.

Well not sure but it is cheaper, reason is the website says self-install costs 245* and techie install 445* or there abouts BUT before this month it use to be free(self install) and call centre people who take orders seem to say its free.. so uncertainty

*estimate/guess its on their website to see it accurately

I think i'm busted anyhow... Cause i don't have a landline atm...

So they have to come out to do the landline install, they might aswell do the ADSL setup etc too.

I was using Wireless uncapped(but it wasn't nice,p2p dodgy, lots of downtime due to tower problems etc..etc). and now i'm on Virgin Mobile 50cents per meg(wich is good for irc and emails, little surfing)

u say u gona get a new line now i bet telkom will charge u for line instalation fee + adsl instalation fee can mayby save 400+ if ask for self install please corect me if i am wrong

I seem to remember seeing an announcement saying that after 1st August, self install will no longer be free, but people who requested it before 1st August will still get it free...
I've been waiting for my line now for 5 months, and it looks like there might finally be movement there - they've allocated me a port, finally! They just need to plug it in now. We'll see if they charge me for the self install or not.

WTF, they charge u R400+ for slow service or R245 for (less slow) remote service?

Is there any update on this w.r.t. clarification of Self-install charges? And is the cost of the kit included in that charge?
[Edit]
OK, I just read this post so I will take my chances with self-install if I take the ADSL plunge. Cost of approx. R60 is mentioned for the ADSL splitter required for self-install.

My self-install was free - had it installed in September. I did have to call Telkom and get them to remove it from the account though.

OK. I decided to also take the ADSL plunge and ordered it today requesting emphatically a SELF-install.

The consultant however told me that Self-install is not guaranteed and a technician might still be required to come out on my premises.
I made it clear - that should this become the case I will be able to opt out of this order - which she assured me.

Now - I have to get an adsl modem and a splitter right?

Any suggestions for a modem? Price is important!
