What is ADSL Self-install?

I tried again to change my order to self-install. Was told that because it is a new adsl order (and a new adsl line) a technician probably still have to come to install "the analogue portion of the line." Anyone know what that means?
 
I asked for a self install, they did nothing. And they've charged full price for the install.. my grandfather was supposed to call them about it since he pays, but he's been busy.. Think I'd better call and complain.. :(
 
I got a call today (i ordered yesterday) The consultant said that within 11 days my line will be changed to ASDL and a technicial will call me to arrange installation.

Thanks to the advice from this forum. I once again emphatically stated that this is a self-install and i dont need a technician to come over to install.

The lady said that self-install is not guaranteed and she will have to verify if that option is available.

I told her that if it's not then I do not wish to go through with the order but she must verify it and come back to me.

I hope this doesnt make 11 days into 111?
 
Just visited my local Telkom shop, spoke to them about it and the consultant said he sent a query through asking to credit my account with what they charged for the install :)

The consultant said though that it didn't state self-install on my order, and I did specifically ask for it! :/

And got a micro filter while I was there.
 
A technician was supposed to come out yesterday afternoon set up ADSL - I even phoned to confirm they were scheduled to be there... no one pitched - big surprise.

Anyway, I'm going to do it myself now and have a few questions -

- What type of cable should be used (I need to route it into another room and don't have enough)?

- What's the best way to splice into a line ie. to extend it?

- What do you tell telkom you want them to do - just switch the line over to an ADSL line and how long is that likely to take? (Do they send a techie out to do this and is it done at the exchange).

I'd appreciate any info anyone can give! :)
