What is Ford?

The SA Ford motor factory was in Port Elizabeth before it was shut down for (mainly) political reasons. Since then they have now built a Ford engine factory that produces Rocam 1300/1600 engines for export to Europe, India, China and Russia and it also powers the local Ford Icon and Ford Bantam ranges. Since last year they also produce the Duratorq TDCi diesel engine for the Ford Ranger.

...The other car I was interested in was the Kia Rio Tec, and again you cant compare quality between the two...even the ford's leather is much better! and of course the dynamics of the Ford beats the Kia hands down.
Does it really beat the Koreans hands down though?

I'm quite a fan of the Korean brands and have owned a couple and they were fantastic! I'm not disagreeing with you, im genuinly asking...

Did you test drive the Korean brands when you were buying your Fiesta?

...Now if you go look at this website http://www.carfax.com/vin_decoding.cfx it actually decodes what your VIN number means.
In my case my VIN number starts with a W meaning that is actually was produced in germany.

The first two digits of your VIN will tell you where the car was built. Look on Wikipedia for the list.

Just with regards to this... The Ford im using's VIN starts with a W, meaning it was made in Germany. Thats always reassuring :p

I was dead set on getting the new Rio Tec, I test drove it twice as I wanted to drive it on the N1 as well, after this I was sold but thing is I never test drove anything else.
When it came down to me actually buying the Rio there was no stock and like a fool i waited for 3 months just to be told that I would have to wait another 3 and then they couldn't even guarantee me a car.

I test drove the opel corsa and then the Ford, and suffice to say the Ford was the last car I drove.

Honestly I am glad Kia did not have stock because I just paid 25K more, got the same features but I got more engine power and amazing handling! even Jeremy Clarkson said the Fiesta's handling is great!

As in the review of the new Peugeot 208 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umdmfWcWR6Y&t=3m28s

:D

And while we are on the subject of Ford did any of you guys know that Ford won best new engine of the year! 1litre 3cylinder turbo lol! The engine's cylinder block is as big a an A4 paper!

No no no... Dont come here with your Peugeot, French nonsense hay! :D JJ

Yea i cant argue with you about the handling there. Ford DOES make very good cars and the one's i've driven sit very nicely in corners. This Zetec Focus that i am driving handles flippin well!!!

So if you had to rate the cars you test drove in order of best to worse, how would that list look?

I would honestly say

1. Fiesta
2. Corsa
3. Rio

The Koreans make awsum cars but they need to work on the engines, why couldn't Kia SA import the Rio with the 1.6GDI engine that is available in the US or the Diesel in Europe, I am sure by now everyone knows you need 50ppm diesel in new cars....

Which car is that engine found in?

Not sure about the current Focus, but the previous one was built locally at their plant in Silverton, Pretoria.

New Focus in the European market and it will be in the upcoming EcoSport compact crossover.

That Focus with the 1lt engine will be in SA next year.

Oh yay! I've waited ALL my life for a 1.0 Turbocharged engine :erm:

I thought the Ford Focus was a performance vehicle? Why would they give it a 1.0l engine :P

Not to say a 1.0l Turbo engine doesn't sound like bundles of fun! I would love that in like a little Mini or something.

Unless they mean 'new focus' like 'new polo vivo'. And the two are different vehicles.

Different strokes... It is extremely economical and environmentally friendly. If I had the cash, I would get such a car for the day to day and an SUV for the weekend. If I had even more cash, I would also get a performance vehicle for the weekends :D

Dunno if i would call a Ford Focus a performance car... The ST maybe and obviously yes for the RS... But the Focus range in general i wouldn't call a "performance" car...

Just with regards to what you said about the 'new Polo Vivo'... Does anyone know if they too, like the Figo, is made in India? Is that why they are the cheaper range of Polo, or did they want to introduce the Polo VI and realised that they could still sell the Polo V and make a fortune? Whats the story here?

Vivo is built in SA for SA specific conditions.

It was cheaper to down spec an old Polo and sell it cheaper than bring in a new baby VW from Europe.
