Hi
I'm busy moving from iBurst to ADSL, and i see that some isps offer 30 gigs of local bandwidth after the cap. What is the practical use of this? is there any way we can actually make use of this?

thanks

Firstly you can access local sites like news24.
Beware - not all .co.za sites are hosted locally and some carry adverts hosted on international sites.
Openweb offers the Openbrowse facility which allows you to browse internationally (no program or music downloads or gaming).

The are local torrent sites like greenlab.co.za which users share files between each other.

You can also access your ISPs newsserver which hosts a wide range of international content.

I've found I can use GoogleTalk locally (with openbrowse).

There is some local gaming, but for your big games like Guild Wars you have to have an international account.

A big problem with local only is you can't do most software and anti-virus updates.

and you can use the IS news servers.......which although very unstable i still download quite a lot from it

cool - loads of possibilities:)

anyone know if it's possible to access gmail with local bandwidth.
by pop3 / smpt or webmail ?

Not Really, although on Outlook, 1 out of 10 tries goes through to my Gmail account to check mail...

local only sucks

local only sucks - dont get an adsl account based on local only, local torrents sucks and the is news server is not the best - no wonder its slow, almost every member of myadsl is downloading from it and they still ask - why is the is news server so slow? - see whats available in your area and go with whats best for you.

The news server is SOO bad that most of us can download in excess of 100gb a month.

ill dispute that.

Local SAIX accounts are a total waste of time, Local IS accounts are far from a waste.

I use a Local account and exceed my 30GB and I get ALOT of entertainment from that. Local Torrents might not work that well, but IS News is awesome... maybe only if you downloading series, but 80% of the stuff I want is cached.

WA/Openweb. IS has a reduced capping policy on many of its local accounts. You may wana read up a bit on the older threads before making comments about a service that works. 6 Posts doesnt get you very far...

WA/Openweb.

to be honest, the few times i've tried the is news server, i got horrible speeds. the completion of articles is fine, i just had a problem with the speed.

what is the average speed the you get from the is news server and if i can ask, what line speed to you have

thanks

Well, if you locate cached content you will 9 times out of 10 download at your full line speed. I currently have a 4mb line on which i generally download at or above 400kb/s from the news servers - this being cached content. Uncached content on the other hand only downloads at between 15-40kb/s. I dont mind the slow speeds as leaving a download on overnight will generally mean its finished by morning. Torrents are a different story, greenlab has some pretty good seeders/uploaders but with all torrent sites you get users that have no clue what they are doing or refuse to seed at speeds quicker than 2kb/s. Torrents are good for quick requests, newsgroups are good for new releases of content which is then uploaded to torrents. www.newshost.za.net and www.greenlab.co.za go hand in hand most of the time. ;)

right now i'm getting 18kb/s on a 384k line.. so its good for at least 1.5 gigs a day

what did i say? - "the is news server is not the best " did I say you cant download 50gigs a month - NO why did I say "the is news server is not the best "?

do a search, on this forum for “is news server problems” and then come back and tell me it’s up and running 100% of the time.

also, do a search for “international IS down”? seems like i need to donate some diesel to keep the servers running.

I did NOT say, IS sucks, I said - "the IS news server is not the best "

for some reason i seem to be the bad dude 2nite?

We are talking about ADSL Local Only...like in NO international.

You've been the bad duse cause you're trying to make a statement with your facts all wrong!

I get a lot of my stuff from the newshost.za.net (IS news servers), greenlab.co.za torrents and some other torrent sites.

It's much cheaper to get stuff locally than from international sites!

Get your facts straight next time
