What is my line speed?

I'm considering getting ADSL for the first time ever (I'm using 3g but the piss poor quality of the signal sometimes :mad: )

I'm considering doing everything through the ISP (line rental etc.)...thinking MWEB maybe /ducks :p

So, how do I know what line speed I qualify for? I'm in a complex in Douglasdale and I've heard everything from "max 2mb" to "area recently upgraded to 10mb". That online tool on the Telkom site gives me nothing :/
 
You should be able to get at least 4mb in most spots that aren't in the sticks. Usually 10. Often 20-40. I wouldn't be too worried though...ADSL tends to "feel" faster despite being sometimes slower than 3G purely because its consistent and stable.

I'd suggest read the Telkom Simple thread and then take it from there. As for ISP...everyone has their own preference...maybe go for CrystalWeb then DJ can assist. Simple is def the easiest way to get things started if you are unsure.

Personally I prefer keeping the ADSL rental Telkom side - but to each his/her own.
 
+1 for keeping the ADSL line with Telkom - or if you really want it with the ISP at least get everything sorted on Telkom first and THEN move it across to the ISP :) Much easier, quicker and less problems that way it seems :)

Do ISPs have problems sorting out lines? I already have the connection to my place so I reckon all that needs to happen is they need to connect it to the exchange or something like that.

We live in quite an upmarket area and our max speed is 10.

Telkom blames ISP, ISP blames Telkom.

The fastest way to make them stfu is to phone Telkom with "Line managed by Telkom, tested with Telkom data...fix it".

There are other things too but essentially ISP route is usually a tiny bit cheaper at the cost of potential hassle.

I've recently seen a few guys here having issues - I had some issues getting my line through WA so decided to just get it through Telkom and it was significantly faster.
Also it seems that if you don't get the line through Telkom first and you need to move houses - the line needs to be moved back to Telkom. Since you never had a line with Telkom, you have to "apply" for one and wait and if the exchange if full and someone get your port before you get it back - sorry for you.

So yes, I think it will be worth at least having it with Telkom for a month before moving your line to your ISP. :)
