I'd definitely go for the Golf 4, especially seeing as the mileage between the two is almost the same. It's a much more modern design, safer and a better drive than a shCiti Golf.

Service costs on the Golf 4 are dirt cheap.

+1
Also MK1 golf is in high demand by criminals, so it will attract unnecessary attention.

1.6 petrol or 1.9dci? Does it even matter? I've never owned a diesel vehicle before.

That's good news, I was worried about service costs. Thanks!

Ah, thanks for the heads up, will stay away.

Will the old Golf 4 still be a better drive or were there some nice feature additions to the Golf mk1 in the late 2000's?

Also what are they like internally? Engine wise etc, will it be hard to get parts for the Golf 4 and be more difficult to work on?

golf 4 much better suspension design. Mk1 same suspension since the 70's.

interior mk1 is upgraded but does not last as long as the mk4. mk4 more of a premium feel(for the time)

also driving feel of the mk1 degrades quicker.
deisel might be pricey on turbo repairs thats if it even has a turbo. general services should be decent

Golf 4 over the golf 1 any day of the week.. its a much better car. I had the 2l golf 4 and the thing was a dream.. still regret selling it

Other than looks of course.

The one is 8 years younger, 8 years!

You'll be able to drive the Golf 4 until it fals apart, whereas the Citi will probably be stolen before your first service

Golf 4 has power steering and aircon

Citi Golf doesn't have power steering and very unlikely to have aircon

I love my diesel, but I'd avoid an older VW diesel. The early VW turbo diesels didn't have a great reputation at the time.
Alright, thanks for the advice! Will try to get a mint 1.6i, they don't come in 1.4i?

Hahaha so it's harder to steal a Golf 4 then? So the Golf 4 is reliable? Can I buy one with 190-200k km's since a lot of them are around that number.
Citi is such a stiff drive, that alone is enough to scare me off.
I driven only 1 Golf before and it was my friends 1.4 carb 2005 Golf mk1, but I drove so slowly 40km/h around the block that I can't tell if it was enjoyable or not.

or airbags

I neeed power steering so bad I hate my cars steering.

Wow a 2.0l, that's fast as all hell.

Alright, didn't know the MK1 was so basic, VW must have made a killing.

Thanks guys, so there's no danger in buying a car from the 1990's? Goldwagen etc will have parts?

Absolutely no problem just as there is still no problem buying a VW Beetle from the 60's! :D

There are ALWAYS parts for a VW, no matter what age.

I had a Mk 111 GTI with the 2 litre motor - W~O~W~! Incredible torque - not much else, but it pulled like a diesel. :)

The Mk IV 2 litre motor was the same I think.. it was fast enough, would cruise at 130/140 comfortably, but its defining feature was that it pulled like a diesel as well.

Yaaaay thanks Fazda!
Actually it wasn't all that fast, it was not the "sporty" version, but it did have boat loads of torque.

Really? I hope the 1.6l isn't a slouch cause I need some acceleration.

The 1.6l is no slouch, ranges from 75kw up to 86kw, the 2.0l I am refering to was roughly about 85kw... the Torque figures are very different though, 1.6l around 145Nm, the 2.0l was around 170Nm.

And yes, parts are not a problem in the slightest. The only thing I would check is the turbo on the Diesel, make sure its in decent knick, and that a replacement won't break your bank if you need one.
