Hi All

It would be appreciated if anyone could help with this. I am in Durban at the moment and did not notice this behavior in Johannesburg with the same dongle.

In 5 mins and 15 secs I had the following bandwidth usage, whilst not browsing/or actively downloading/uploading, from the Cell C application 'Statistics' menu.

Uploading Data: 948.92 kb
Download Data: 351.54 kb

I am sure that something is wrong, I used the latest AVG anti-virus and found nothing.
The only web page that was open during this test was this one.

Thanks

Maybe run netstat -b, or tcpmon to find out what app's are using the internet... but it's less than 1MB, I wouldn't be that worried. If it were in the MB's tho, I would be suspicious.

Due to the fact its less than 1MB, and you had one web page open, it could even have been your browser... does it reload pages in the background, or check for auto updates etc.

I have netmeter running in a small little pop-up so I can see when something fishy is going on ... (excessive uploads and downloads)
but please note - Kb is quite a bit less than KB (8x less)

and normally with an internet connection - there is a constant send and receive which checks that the connection is still active

+1 also programmes such as google update etc tend to communicate once a internet connection is made to check update available etc (opera etc)

Simple test....block all traffic to applications you know that use the internet connection using your firewall. If data is still been used than well should I say much, if not than enable disable around to get the application using that data.Hope this helps

NetworX is much better!
You will have full statistic by hours, days, weeks, month!
Also you can see with it internal NetStat what is connected to internet. Very useful to trace suspitious activity.

Solution and hints to anyone else with this type of problem

Thanks for all the pointers. I believe that I have solved the problem, which was worse than I indicated originally. The difference between Kb and KB matters!

The Statistics are as follows:
For 5 mins and 5 secs:
Uploading Data: 948.92 KB
Download Data: 351.54 KB

Apologies for not transcribing it correctly.

Solution

The most useful tool is to use netstat -a in the Windows command window.

Thereafter, I found that my computer was infected with a Trojan, and was being used to possibly send spam..

The free program Malwarebytes was used and to detect and remove the virus.

Now after 15 minutes of browsing:

Uploading Data: 320 KB
Download Data: 1.01 MB

Which is more acceptable and what it used to be.

Thanks again to all who posted with suggestions.

What AV were you using?
I've notice both Eset & Trustport won't let ZTE's Join Air open, don't know whether its a false block or not,but they both shut it down if i try to use it
