My PPPOE ADSL connection keeps dropping once every 3 mins.

What could be 'other' most common reason besides ISP issues?

Are you in India or South Africa?

Anyway, it could be the weather, distance from exchange etc.

Have you tried connecting in bridge mode?

I also have the same problem with the connection dropping very few minutes. I was told I can't have 4mb adsl as I'm too far from the exchange, so stuck with 512kb. I am considering moving to 384 to see if it's more stable, but I'd prefer not to as this might be too slow. What is bridge mode? Do I change that setting on my router? Any other settings I might check while I'm busy with the router?

Well I'm clueless with details but in your router, just change the router mode from PPPOE to Bridge and then you create a dialup-type connection and then "dial in" to your ISP.

Yes I'm in India.
And it was working perfectly for the last 2 years !

Ironically it was in pppoe dial up mode earlier and since it kept dropping the connection once every 2 or 3 mins I decided to make it dial directly from the modem itself. Initially it seemed to work but again after sometime started dropping the connection.

But generally which is more stable direct dialing or pppoe bridge dialing ?

I have set high values for idle timeout etc

I had a similar problem a while back. My actual line got damaged. They (telkom) rewired it and is now fine. I can only think of a hardware problem if it was working for 2 years without a problem.

Yeah, could easily be line damage. Have you ever tried an analog phone over the line? It's usually noisy or dead if there's line damage.

I'd say there's no difference, in one case the modem/router is making the connection, in the other the PC is making the connection, at the end of the day it is the exact same thing. The one is not going to make things better.

As others have suggested, it's probably a line fault.

If you mean disconnecting as in your modem is physically losing sync - then I'd suspect a line problem. If it's just your pppoe connection that's dropping while your modem stays synced, it's more likely a problem with the dslam or ISP.
