What is the problem with IS semi-shaped?!

This has been happening for a week now. From early evening until about 07h30 it's running at +-3300kbps down and 420kbps up (on 4mb line), but after 08h00 and through the day it degrades badly to 700kbps down, 360kbps up.

Switch to the SAIX shaped bundle during the slow period, and normal performance is achieved.

Axxess has been trying to get an answer from IS, but no help from that quarter.

Anyone else using this product noticed a serious downgrade in performance?

I have the same problem. Everything is aweful during the day and fine during the night. I think they try a little too hard to shape...

Another thing about semi-shaped is that certain sites just cannot be accessed with semi-shaped. I visit 2 forums frequently; this one and an American NVIDIA GFX card forum. With semi-shaped I just can't get into that site.

which sites in particular can't you access. i've never had issues with site access. i never have to access during the work week so can't attest to that issue.

With my semi-shaped account I can access anything, just not as fast as via SAIX shaped.

Time is 09h25, and it's the same again today.

Too bad I've still got 2.5gb left on this bundle, but seeing as it can roll over indefinitely maybe I'll just park it. Perhaps someday, in the not too distant future, IS will sort the problem out. After my initial pleasure with the service, it's turned into a real disappointment, and the complete absence of support and feedback has really dented my impression of IS (and Axxess, to a certain extent).

I'm just glad that I can freely change bundles when service levels fall - that's real democracy, not being tied in to one service provider with a contract!

That's unfortunate. I've been absolutely loving my IS Fibre Semi-shaped account (with Nexus). Then again, I only use it after work on weekdays and all weekend (i.e. when it is unshaped).

I'm going to be working from home the next month, so I'll have to use it during shaped/peak time... Colour me worried!

I had some issues yesterday and the day before but today everything is 100% again.

Your experiences with IS semi-shaped?

I'm sure the semi-shaped service can't be this bad for everybody. I've seen no other complaints to date, which makes me wonder if it's only me (setup wrong?), the SP (all Axxess clients experiencing this?), or is IS throttling the service mercilessly to give priority to unshaped clients?

Who else is using IS semi-shaped, and what does your daytime performance look like? Who is your SP?

I have problems with it now and then...
To give an indication of the difference between shaped and unshaped on my line with the semi-shaped:
Shaped: 283, 26ms MyBB
Unshaped: <<180-200ms on an international connection, 20ms MyBB

well all i can say is nexus's custom dsl which is semi unshaped is fin when i tried it , but **** try some openweb vpn last night and it went like this

hope this is done quick, getting anything from 5kbps up too 33kbps on

I have problems with it now and then...

This is probably not the same problem - my issue is that it happens EVERY weekday between 08h30 (ish) until 17h30 (ish - or should that be eish!). After hours and weekends (i.e. unshaped hours) it's perfect.

Does that sound like brutal throttling?

That was the start. My pings are not too bad. But opening webpages often take forever.

I did a speed.io test yesterday. Downstream was ever so slightly slower than it is during unshaped time, at around 3300kbps. Upload SUCKED at about 160kbps (usually 430kbps). Latency and number of connections seemed okay.

Today, I ran an international torrent at about 11am. Finished with an average speed of 130kBps, which is not bad at all...

So, it seems pretty inconsistent!

And just to prove my point about how well IS semi can go during off-peak, here is that test to New York again!
Download Speed: 3388 kbps (423.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 395 kbps (49.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

And this will be right now, when the wires are humming in the USA with elections taking place! Obviously no speed limiting taking place on that end.

And your SP is..?

I'd be interested to know what results you get on:
speedtest.net and
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ (New York, as per the survey test)
during peak hours.

I'd really like to know if this is an IS problem or not. There's no point in moving to another SP if the problem rests with IS.

Nexus ISP.

I'll do that speed test tomorrow during peak time and let you know what results I get.
