What Is Wrong With My Onboard Sound?

For about two months now, I have been using GuitarFX 3 on my PC as a guitar amp. I plug my guitar into my line-in jack and output to four speaker via my lines-out.

Since about an hour ago, I have been getting subsonic rumbling and clicking/popping on my front speakers and on my headphones, as well as abnormally high CPU usage, while playing. I have also noticed that, even after stopping Guitar FX and muting all input audio lines, I can still hear buzzing and rumbling when I strum my guitar strings. Also when playing songs I have created in FL Studio 5, I now constantly get audio buffer overruns, which I have never had before.

I am using SoundMax integrated audio on a 5 year old Intel motherboard. I have not recently changed my hardware configuration nor have I changed any software settings, except for muting and unmuting audio lines.

Has anyone ever experienced something similar? Is my motherboard dying? :(

EDIT: Yes, I have checked that all audio jacks are firmly connected and that there are no hardware IRQ conflicts ;)

Is there any way you could borrow a soundcard from someone and try and see if there is a difference? Maybe it is only the sound "chipset?" that got damaged on the MB.
 
Well you might as well get a soundcard if you are planning to record and play through it.

I also play guitar through my PC, and record stuff often. A new soundcard really helped with getting rid of alot of that crackled and improving the sound.
 
I'm getting a new PC with a Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic on 1 February, but I need to live with this rubbish until then. Thanks for the advice, Ekhaatvensters.
 
are you guys all using asio drivers, or asio4all, to get rid of the latency?

stupid suggestion but worth a try - mute anything you do not need. ie - Mic in, MIDI, ect ect.

Not a stupid suggestion, except for the fact that I've already tried it, as stated in my original post. ;)

The strangest thing is, I still hear this rumbling noise after muting the master volume and only on the front speakers and headphones. It's definitely not the speakers, since I have tried swapping the front and rear speakers :confused:

have tried muting all output levels? another stupid suggestion :p

the reason why i ask is once i had a funny his noise with an old yamaha s/c and only when i muted MIDI output did it stop.

mind you it was a crap card.
