I'm trying to work out which ADSL option would be the best value for money for me.

(Average Total Monthly Cost)/(Average Monthly Usage in GB)

Please post which package(s) you are using as well :)

Go look on the Hellkom website at the different ISP's available, u can cross ref all the diff account sizes and prices... unfortunately i would go for Telkom as ISP because they allow you to exceed your cap quite considerably before being capped...thats local and international. I cant think of another isp that allows that..

Openweb 3GB IS with 30GB local and OpenBrowse 192k.

I pay R269pm. I use about 15GB average per month.

About R18 per gigabyte, but obviously most of what I use is local bandwidth.

I dont use ADSL (I use MyWireless) but in case you are interested

R50 (R499/10)

This does exlude the modem however. With modem

R65 (649/10)

i wld say if your not interested in international b/w, openweb is the best option... plenty local and then the proxy if u want to browse international once cap has been exceeded...also the opencourier service is pretty cool.

I pay around R250 per month for 30GB IS local. Considering I use IS mainly for newsgroup downloads, this is fine. so, around R8.30 per GB

Local IS newsserver downloads (WebAfrica 2gb/28Gb) R180 = R6.07/Gb
International SAIX (BF2 gaming +- 3Gb per month) (WebAfrica PrePaid) R75/gb

Ilitirit:

are you looking for IS prices?

or are you looking for SAIX prices?

SAIX is better for International bandwidth as it utilises the SAT-3 undersea cable.

IS use Satellite bandwidth for International.. not very good, often problems (especially at the end of the month).

if you are looking for SAIX, which i advise you to do, then CyberSmart ISP sells 3GB accounts for R100 for 192k line speed. you won't find cheaper.

what a lot of people do is have a SAIX account for International purposes, and an IS account for Local.

I used one 10gig SAOL SAIX account wich is R500 so R50/mb
And one Openweb 3GB IS with 28GB local and OpenBrowse 96k for R239. So that's R7,96/mb.

hmm...didn't realise you only wanted the ISP costs. I included line rental, etc

Comes down to about R20 per Gb then

i'm looking for average cost per gigabyte based on average monthly cost, excluding installation + hardware fees. so if your average cost is:

R150 (ISP) + R300 (Rental) + R90 (Other) and you use 15GB, then your average cost per GB is R36.00

the reason i'm interested in the values in this format is because certain packages provide better value for money depending on your usage, so it's not always clear which one would be better just by looking at the total cost.

nah i am interested in line rental, ISP, and any other costs related to your adsl besides installation and hardware.

Ok. Then my statement of R50 is correct. This includes absolutely everything except installation and hardware. And that is international bandwidth.

In the ADSL section if you click on the calculator icon the TCO page shows you your total cost each month for that ISP account and includes phone line rental, ADSL line rental and ISP cost.

For a chilling effect it also shows you what it costs per day and per year. :)

well IS will always be cheaper then.. but, it's the worst bandwidth to have..

Nice one MaD.

One small bug I noticed, the business 1024 total cost per year is the same as the 512.

Aah just what I was looking for...
Thanks!

edit:
On second thought, it's not *exactly* what I needed, but I suppose I could massage the data into R/GB fairly easily.

These prices need updating with the 1 August changes - allthough the impact is nowhere near what telkom would have you believe!
