What is your reason to live?

i plan on killing you all one day. this house arrest is the only thing stopping me right now :p THAT is what i live for :D

What about the pea aphids that explodes in the presence of a lady bug, in order to try and kill it. Is that not natural as it values the collective higher than itself.

You would first have to substantiate that the apid is aware of "self" and also the "collective".
Then you would have to substantiate that the aphid is aware of "good" vs "evil".

I drink so I can live,so I don't feel depressed/anxiety.So I can't help you bud :(

EDIT: I think I have only been sober 3 times last year.

Odly in my book that is a cowards suicide and not living.
Not the way to go in life bro, Find a reason, even if its to see how many "meaning one night relationships" you can have :)

Yeah it is a cowards way out but im studying psychology/criminology so hopefully I will stop people going my direction but obviously I need to sort myself out first.

I think the OP's question is closely related to the purpose of life.

I believe human life on earth is no more than a biological event: you're born, you live and you die.

It does not mean that life is not beautiful sometimes and terrible at other times. That being said, it's just a chain of events - it has a beginning and an end. I am not sure that we ought to place more emphasis and meaning on it.

My 2c :)

I highly doubt the aphid gets the 'in order to' bit. It prolly poeps itself and that's it's body's instinctive reaction. Perhaps it just responds instinctively to the pheremones of the lady bug... i.e. it smells so lekker he could just die. :p

Imagine if women gave into their once a month emotions.
/ducks

I'm inclined to agree IMO for example fear is an emotion, the fight, flight, freeze response is instinctive.

Both parties are wrong :p

Instinct is your basic building block or enabler from which emotions can develop. Without it we would not be able to deduce what makes us survive and what does not ie what makes us happy and what does not.

I always thought instinct was little more than a decision making mechanism that can be conditioned much like emotion... and even passed on genetically to some degree... I.e. very grey area.

I live for living. Living each day to make the next one even better.

One word:
Conditioning.

Sorry Kages, youre basically saying a learnt emotional response is learnt. It tells me nothing. Beware of self-evident truths.

I suspect your and Technes logic is along the lines of suicidal urges can't be natural therefore they must be learnt.

The most interesting way to kill an infant mammal is to deprive it of physical contact from birth (not sustenance and shelter mind you). That strongly suggests that self-destructiveness is not conditioned into us but rather that the opposite is true.

I had to go back to my reply.

The term conditioning was in answer to your question:
Ok, I'll concede that emotional responses can be learned. How do we learn to feel like killing ourselves?
Conditioning can be used to encourage some emotional responces and discourage others.
There is not reason why condition can not be used to discourage a postitive attitude of self and encourage a negative view of self.
Condition has alreayd been proven to be used to change actions and reactions.

I suspect your and Technes logic is along the lines of suicidal urges can't be natural therefore they must be learnt.

I agree with Techne on his remark relevant to this discussion.
It is clear that you are unable to discuss the topic at hand on it's own merits and disagree or agree with posts that is relevant to the discussion whether the ideaologies of the OP agrees with yours or not.

Disagreeing for the sake of disagreeing is FAIL Nick and I expected better from you.

I am not arguing original conditioning but arguing that conditioning can affect suicidal tendencies as in my responce to your question.

I can die anytime, I (from what i guess) only live once.
Why give up something you can only have for a limited time for something that you can have anytime.
