What is your water usage?

If a 50l can registers as 27l it's very faulty, but in a good way.

I suspect the can was only 25l though.

EDIT: unless this is a riddle.. in which case there was already 23l in the can...
My 25lt is very big, that 50 litre must be huge. Even the 19.5lt water cooler bottles are already quite big.

8kl per month on average over the last 2 years. 2 people most of the time, 5 people for a few months of that

checked that already (except the size of the jerry, that I did not check)
How old is your laundry machines, and dishwasher? Older use more water.

Do you use muni water for irrigation?

Toilets, low flush toilets does exist, but get a decent one.

Do all 6 persons shower, or do they bath. My daughter bath's, but my wife amd I shower.

Can something be leaking that only leaks when in use?

Do you use muni water for irrigation? - Yes

Toilets, low flush toilets does exist, but get a decent one - have the 1/2 dot flush system, mostly use the single dot (half-flush)

Do all 6 persons shower, or do they bath. My daughter bath's, but my wife amd I shower - 5 shower, 1 bath (year old)

Can something be leaking that only leaks when in use? - one outside tap leaks a little bit, but it's basically just a tiny bit on the floor

@The_MAC

I could not reply direct for some reason:

This is a mistake we all make. Fix it and see how much water you save. I was surprise after fixing a small leak how much water 8 was actually using.

@The_MAC What is your water bill?

For the amount of water you use, it might be worthwile for a wellpoint or borehole?
R1725 only for water - I am getting quotes, it equates to roughly 4 years to payback on a R80k borehole, economically it makes sense

Once we moved our laundry onto the rainwater system our usage plummeted. At the time our top-loader was using 110l a load. The newer front loader uses half of that but we're still doing ten or more loads a week.

We can also switch mains completely off, whenever necessary, for months at a time.

Cheaper than a borehole and it scales well, provided you've got the space for tanks :)

Around 7-8 kl/month for a family of 3. Kid baths most nights. Was closer to 10kl's before installing a water-saver shower head on main shower. We've still kept some of the 'Day 0' habits, such as (mostly) only flushing for #2's. We have a garden, but water that via a wellpoint which no doubt makes a huge difference.

Dont forget your sewerage charge as well, which is calculated from the same water usage on your meter.

Correct, rich people $hit more than poor poeple
Should see the latest proposed tariffs from City power. Prepaid will be split into 2 tiers. Low usage and high usage. Low usage is apparently only for indigent people and high usage is apparently regular people who will now need to pay R553 service and connection fee..
Why even call it low and high usage when in reality it's not that at all.
