We felt it was time to let you all know what us Jawuggers have been up to! We have been pretty quiet, but not because we have lost interest, not at all. We have all been hard at work, linking nodes together, climbing towers, installing kit on highsites etc.
Here is what we have achieved in the last couple of months:
The “Wild West Mesh” (Roodepoort Area) consisting of around 18 or so people have now connected to the “Wicked East” guys (Edenvale Area) consisting of about 7 people. The “Outlaw” network (Benoni Area) consisting of about 3 people are also connected, via our highsite at Dawnview. The Dawnview link to Benoni is around about 17kms, and the link from East to West is about 22kms. These backbone links are utilising 5.8ghz technology, so the speeds are impressive.
I am based in the West, but am able to download files from servers in the East, at an impressive 10megabit+ a second. As an example, I downloaded 770MB last night in 8 minutes.
We are currently fine tuning, and slowly improving things on all of these networks, and are also busy with additional backbone links to more areas
We have been getting together once a month, to discuss future plans, future nodes etc, and allowing everyone a chance to meet each other – as most of the communication occurs inside the IRC channel.
We are busy developing a website to represent Wireless User Groups in SA (www.wug.za.net) and hard work is also being done on a Nodeplotter system, similar to NodeDB.
There is also work taking place on a custom firmware version for Jawug.
The equipment of choice at the moment, is the RB112 Routerboard, running Mikrotik, as well as the WRAP, and of course, the WRT54G/L
