I can't believe there isn't a gui utility to setup a pppoe connection in ()ubuntu

I'm sure there is, but I probably have to download it first and I need to configure ADSL before I can do that. To be fair, I was installing off the Kubuntu liveCD not the DVD, but a DSL config GUI should be a standard install since internet is something most users will want to configure straight away.

I have never installed nor used a proper Linux OS however lately I have been playing around with the Linux Live boot environments.

Between Slax, Knoppix and Kanotix Live I would say Kanotix is the best. It also has an install to Hard-Drive feature instead of booting it Live and I was able to setup ADSL pppoe dial-up and browse Internet without much fuss.

Kanotix is based on Debian GNU/Linux.

But the pppoeconf utility is the easiest way to set up a connection, no hassles, no difficult areas, even I could do it, and that says a lot about its simplicity, although having a gui where I can stop and start a connection, now that would be a plus, if only for the quick use of it, cause pon and poff isnt a brain teaser either

Can't remember Slax, but I'm certain Knoppix also has an HD install (though that would miss the point.)

Ubuntu/Kubuntu etc also come as live cds with an install to hd option.

Slax was simple and nice with all basic pre-installed programs put neatly together. Knoppix on the other hand felt way too cluttered and poorly put together for me :/ a hundred programs I will never use plus only some of them have icons and others not making the menus look cheap.

Kanotix I felt was almost a balance of the two with more thought put into ease of use so my first impression of all three and I think Kanotix is the winner. :)

Knoppix does have 101+ features as well though so I wouldn't be surprised if it had a HD install, I just didn't see it which is it's main problem once again. With Kanotix I felt I knew more or less what it was capable of the second I started using it.

Yes. A primary school. Grade R, 1 - 7. 1100 learners.

Cool, How do you find it ? which version do you use ? Do you use all of the features ? like the off line wikipedia and school tool features ?

I have been intrigued to see if there are actually any schools running the full edubuntu setup.

Yeah, I know what you're saying about knoppix. It's nice to check out, look at some apps that you may not have known about - but I think that actually using it daily can't be very good for your mental health. :)

You mean 8.04 BETA. 8.04 will only be released on the 24th I think it is

I run Kubuntu 7.10. Haven't found anything better from the dozen or so I have tried

Everybody knows it by now.

Gentoo on Internet Gateway at home (doing ppp on 3G PCMCIA card)
64Studio for my digital audio workstation - AMD64 4600-X2
Ubuntu 7.04 on my day to day desktop - AMD64 3500
Ubuntu 7.10 on my laptop - Centrino hp
Knoppix for troubleshooting esp disk data recovery. Knoppix rocks - it has bailed me out many times. Not for day-to-day though.
I have tried Ubuntu Studio - looks quite nice.

Every distro has its issues - I'm a real Linux slut - just love checking out various distros ;)

Offline Wikipedia? Huh? Really? I haven't seen it on my version. Edubuntu 7.10 - Gutsy Gibbon.

It's has its unstabile moments. Especially with the edu-gaming package, GCompris. GCompris is a great set of games but it freezes often and various glitches in the set makes it a real pain in the arse to work with sometimes.

*feels smug* Just got Ubuntu 7.10 Feisty and Compiz Fusion installed on my EEE and tweaked just so in order to be able to access some buttons that aren't reachable because of the small size. Mandriva apparently works perfectly out of the box, but the 4+gb download is kinda offputting.

Hi firstly, can someone set up a poll; I wanted to start thread like this one but did not know how to do "poll" on this forum.

Anyway, back to the topic: Ubuntu 8.04 GNOME, PuppyLinux 4.0 Beta LiveCD

A distro-whore would be more suitable..been through so many distro's (would say almost all on distrowatch (rpm, deb, slack, gentoo); but kept coming back to faithful wife Ubuntu...

The EEE's perfect now ^_^ Have VNC on it and a server on my desktop so now I can work on a system with lots of hard drive space and desktop space while still being mobile! And the Compiz cube helps functionality a LOT. I love linux SO much! Almost switched to XP today. Glad I didn't. </end love-sick rant>
