What makes a browser fast?

I have IE, FireFox and Safari for PC installed. Safari loads pages much faster than the others (using the same internet connection).

Why is this?
 
the ability to left click, right click and double click, sometimes even shift+click or ctrl+click...these are what makes a browser fast.
Also, having two hands available will also make for faster browsing.

(yes, this is a joke...if you dont get it then you havent watched the IT CROWD)
 
Rendering speed, I make firefox render regardless if everything is downloaded or not, use fasterfox addon for firefox. As you read from the top of a page usually it doesn't matter if the last image located on a broken server is downloaded before you start reading.
 
to complete your comparison, pls install Opera as well - it has the fastest rendering engine of the lot (the engine is even called Presto.)

SO outside of caching it is 'rendering' that make them go faster?
 
Opera rocks, but to be honest, you can only take a browser so far, some of the plugins I hear about for all these new browsers are ridiculous. As long as it loads in a relatively short time and I can browse 99% of sites, I don't care what I use.
 
A good measure of sites I don't want to visit are those that don't load in Opera, because they're badly made and never very professional. I think of it as an extra feature :D

Unfortunately in 9.5 they're working on getting badly coded pages to render better. :p

I love Opera, but have to use IE or FF for sites that don't render properly eg. V4me or even FNB internet banking page.

On some sites (V4me included) it goes to the wap page:(
 
you can always right click on a page, go into "Edit Site Preferences" and "Mask as IE" or FF - that often solves problems
 
Ja, that solves the problem for V4me, and possibly the banking sites, they often just block your browser because they don't recognise it. But it is better to be safe with online banking.
 
Installed Opera. No real comment on speed but I love the speeddial gimmick and the look and feel is great. I'm hooked.
 
For the main speed tweak type opera:config as the url, and go to User Prefs. The big ones are Fist Update Delay, how long it waits before starting to render a page, and Update Delay. If you set update delay to 0 you'll see images comes down in a smooth line instead of in blocks, it updates instantly.
 
I like Mozilla Firefox more than Opera, personally... But I'd still use Opera before I use Internet Explorer :eek:
