I find online Office 365 to be clunky and I like to work offline because I travel a lot. I want to buy something out of the box. What do you guys suggest or use?

Tia

Office 365 is similar to Office 2016/2019. The only difference is licensing and online features/perks.

If you don't like MS Office, there's quite a few free and Open Source ones to choose from.

Office 365 includes the same desktop software as Office 2019 Professional. You should not be having any issues with working offline. Just turn off OneDrive auto-save features if you're getting error notices or something related to your connectivity. And also make sure you're not using the default save options - 'Browse' under 'Other Locations' in the 'Save As' tab will open the standard save dialogue that most people expect.

You can download the desktop app and sign in with your office 365 account, no need to only use the online version.

Are you using the Free online-only Office 365?

I use Office 365 Home (probably called Microsoft 365 Home now) where I look for the cheapest license I can find each year, since it allows me to download and install and run Office on up to 6 computers at the same time.

Didn't realize I could download it. Anyway I've done that and applied my license and it's working great!

Office 2007

I may not be an MS fan but those old office editions were very stable and easy to use. Just ran on anything and never died. I missed my old 2002 but it eventually just couldn't keep up with the changes.

Libreoffice. Lol! That is like comparing a Tata to a Ferrari.
Since when does Google have an offline office suite?

If you aren't connected to the internet, you can still create, view, and edit files on:
Google Docs
Google Sheets
Google Slides
Been available since 2013 if not earlier...

EDIT: also needed to fire up Libreoffice countless times when I received locked down Excel files via email.

Libreoffice or Google Docs. Free and does the job.

I like Google Docs, especially Google Sheets, but there is a lot that it can't do. I get sent crazy Excel files all the time that only work properly in Excel. And I have G Suite/now Workspace, so my preference would be working seamlessly in the cloud.
