What Multimedia Player should I get for Parents?

I have been looking around the web and on the forums but I am now just confused.
If I was getting something for myself I would make my own HTPC, but I need something easy for my mom.

Budget is R2000 but would prefer it to be less.
Has to include a Hard drive in this budget as my mom doesn't have one. (no need for a huge drive, 250 or 500 gig would be fine)
Must be HD and play MKV's, no need for networking or wifi, I will be putting the media on the drive for her it just needs to be easy for her to use and play.

So I guess what I'm asking is what is a decent media player in my budget that is going to play media well and not be obsolete in a year.

So far I'm looking at:

My parents have the WD Elements player, plays everything, comes with a HDD and is pretty simple to use. Just a warning, you can not transfer files to it from OSX Lion. Found this out the hard way and had to transfer 400 gigs from my other HDD through a little Samsung netbook on the player. It took a while.

Thanks for the opinion, but the need to still buy a hdd for the WD TV live makes it to pricey.
Would be about R1,700 with a 500GB portable HDD? It's the one I sell to all the older folk and they love it.

2 year warranty also with good support/updates. Built in wifi etc.

Spose you could save a few hundred with an unknown brand with lesser warranty/support/software updates.
