So in about a year's time my current vehicle will be out of motor-plan and since I tend not to keep pricier cars out of plan (for obvious reasons) I need to consider a replacement and thought I'd put up my choices for critique and to see if I've missed any possible contenders

Requirements:
  • Fairly uncommon
  • Performance oriented
  • R700k or less
  • I tend to buy 1 or 2 year old low mileage cars, not new
  • I'm not aligned to any specific brands
Last 3 cars I've owned:
  • Audi S3 (slightly modified)
  • BMW 135i (heavily modified)
  • BMW M240i (current)
Current considerations:
  • BMW X3 M40i
  • BMW M2 (OG, not Competition)
  • F8x BMW M3/M4
  • Toyota GR Supra
  • Facelift Golf 7R
  • Pre-facelift Mercedes C63/63S
I do realise that some of my considerations are unlikely to be found within budget and with plan remaining, but I would revise my budget if I really had to.

You can buy a Supra new for that amount.
Toyota special still available if you mention it

Yep I've seen a few advertised for around that . The Supra is probably one of the stronger contenders on the list, but isn't an automatic win due to a few angles on that car that don't grab me and the difficulty of getting in and out of it without smashing your head (and I'm pretty much avg height)

X3 - you do passengers to worry about or like the bus style back-end versus the X4 ?

i don't ride in the back so prefer the X4

Mhmm. Other than the Supra, your options are fairly common. Thought you mentioned it should be fairly uncommon?

Megane RS 300 Trophy, Mustang GT, BMW 6 Series?

I vote M2, not that I've ever driven any of those listed.
From what I've heard, the M cars really are a class above the normal _40 cars.

Something else to consider... how much is outstanding on your current car? For the payments of a R700K car, you can quickly set up a massive rainy day fund for when something goes wrong.

Yeah. But the M2 isn’t a true M Car. Uses the N55 - not an M engine.

I've seen opinions that it is the better car between it and the M2 Competition which has an M engine, due to it being quite a bit lighter.
It has the M3/M4 rear axle, and most reviewers say that it is a more fun car than the M3/M4.

The same could be said of the N54 in the 1M but that is widely regarded now as one of the best M cars made. As a package the M2 has always been regarded as a solid choice. Also the N55 sounds a lot better than the S55 in the Comp ;)

Not much left owing on it, will be paid off before the plan ends.

A good option too, but I'd be lying if I didn't admit that half the reason is an "itch" for something new.

I drove my nephews 2019 M2. Was fairly surprised - it's quite nippy and comfortable to boot as well.

Sadly the engine overheated this year (19 000km) and blew all sorts of things... Dealership says it was redlined too often lol

I’m with you on that, agree 100%. Maybe it’s just me, I just feel as though an M2 isn’t that much of an upgrade over the M240i. Again, this could be just me.

Or maybe you could get a 1M :)

M2 is a great car, no doubt. My point of view comes from the fact that he has the M240i now. I doesn’t feel like much of a step up from his current vehicle.

So the dealer didn’t give him a new engine?

After a lot of fuss, they eventually replaced it.
BMW is full of crap these days. Plenty cases of them denying warranty claims, accusing owners of abuse and/or unauthorized modification, which owners are forced to make a legal issue of, which they very often win in the end but kill their trust in/love for the brand.

If that is the case, even the Supra wouldn't?
More of the same?
Having driven both I must say neither feels particularly unfamiliar (not a bad thing!)

The M2 is pretty much identical in terms of the cabin. The Supra interior has some bits which are clearly from the BMW catalogue and sounds very much like my current car.

Both options however felt different enough that it would not feel like I would be buying the same car again.

Personally just found the M2 interior a little dated with the new cars coming out.

Haven't had an opportunity in a M2 but drove the Supra and loved it.
