oops, sorry, I just pulled 2.2 gig in the last 14 hours and still going strong

my bad...

Help save the bandwidth. Decent download speeds for TheRodent! Stop downloading now!!!

I'm happy again (with my 128k connection, not Sentech). My speeds and lantency appear to be back to acceptable levels again.

Currently, 6% of MyWireless users in South Africa are “hogging” 50% of the network!

Now work with me here guys, 'cos my maths is a bit shaky. But if we switch off that 6% (it's probably just noone) then we should all see a 100% improvement in performance, right!? (We're only getting 50%, add another 50% which doubles it or 100% improvement)

That would take TheRodent 2.7k to 5k so where's the rest of the poor bugger's bandwidth gone? He's clearly NOT one of the 6% as he's not got the bandwidth to kill 50% of the network.

Have Sentech let slip how many users thay have signed up? That would be a useful tidbit of information to start cruching some numbers with.

I hear rumours of them having a 100Mb pipe to IS, but that's not been confirmed, I'll see what I can dig up from the IS boys, but it would suggest that the bad 6% of the users are using 50Mb/s of bandwidth, so, assuming they're all on 512k packages, I get 100 users (all going at full tilt). So by that token there are 1600 Sentech users out there. I find that unlikely to be honest, but maybe that's just my ignorance.

Comments?

your math is spot on, but the problem lies a lot deeper.
the 6% is one part of the problem. since you're into maths, I'll put it into mathematical terms
sum[(6% users) , (Backhaul links) , (Bandwidth management), (STUPID MANAGEMENT)]= Kr@p service

on another note, that 6% is only part of a statistic, probably the highest part, we don't have the rest, which could say
Currently, 10% of MyWireless users in South Africa are “hogging” 30% of the network!

Which based on your calculations leaves 20% for the rest of the MyWi Network (which apparently makes up between 2% and 5%)

To make any calculations, you need a factual point to start from. When Marcel Raath says "Good morning", I would go and check if the sun is out (and if he is standing up at the time)

Math can be helpful when working with facts...beerygaz, keep going as the grey matter at least gets a bit of excercise!

If you can believe anything reported in the press about this issue: They claim to have 2000 users and plan to have more than 22000 by the end of the year.

So be prepared for a further 10x decreae in speed ;)
