I know this has been asked a few times but components change so here we go again.

I am looking to build a new PC that will take over as my main PC at home for work and play. I don't game much but might do later via XBOX One remote play and maybe try get into PC gaming (been roughly 13 years).

I use the PC mainly for website design and coding, alot of browser work and some photoshop. I want this PC to be usable for a while still. Might also look into basic video editing at some stage but that must affect the hardware as it is a massive maybe.

I have seen the CPU's from PotterH so I take it that is the best starting point (unsure which to go for tho)? What else do I need and what is the best bang for buck (as the kids say these days)? I am looking at spending around R10k (only if that is do-able)? I already have OS and monitor etc.

Thanks.

Newest Intel is codenamed Skylake, 6th Gen.
I'd start there, either a Core i5 or i7 with a Z170 chipset motherboard (that supports DDR4, not all of them do).
And I guess the latest series nVidia gpu.

What soul said, if you can spare another grand the 500gb ssd will be worth it

You might be in luck, PotterH has started selling bundles.

GIGABYTE-B85M-D3H + Intel Core i5-4590 + 8gb 1600mhz ddr3 ram + intel HSF BUNDLES

R3299

That leaves you R6701 for a SSD and GPU

Samsung 850 EVO 250GB R1749

Sapphire R9 380X R4899

Total = R9947

I did see those bundles - are they worth it tho? Or could I buy separate and get better parts?

With the GPU - is that not maybe overkill or is that the basic ones are going for now (haven't bought a GPU in many many years). I'm also going to need a case so wherever I can save will be great. But I obviously don't want to sacrifice on GPU if the difference between that card and one that is R1k less gives terrible performance.

I have the i5 4590 and 8GB RAM, highly recommended, it will do everything you want with a smile for a couple of years to come, at which point you just add a i7 4790 for cheap second hand.

I didn't know a case was needed, you can go for a cheaper GPU but the one I linked really is the sweet spot bang for buck wise. Do you need a case and PSU?

Also there is no way you are getting better value than that bundle. If you buy everything in the bundle at Wootware it will cost you R6369.

Ahhhhh a PSU - that would actually help. I really need everything for this build for the PC to work besides OS and monitor.

So I will see if that combo still available. Then it's just case, PSU SSD/HDD and GPU. Don't think I'm forgetting anything?

That mobo in the combo is also good then?

Yes indeed the motherboard is good, all the SATA and USB ports you will need, including front USB 3.0.

Case is a matter of personal taste, you pick a case for yourself and report back and I will adjust the build to fit the new budget.

Ahhhh you sir are once again a saint .

I will look for a case this evening. Also need a PSU that will run the GPU and everything else.

No problem, I want people to have good PC's :D

I just checked and case prices have gone up since last I bought, but I recommend you get one with front USB 3.0 for future proofing. I will then just minus the case you pick from the 10k and add a nice GPU, PSU and SSD and you're ready to go, assuming you will use your old keyboard and mouse.

That sounds great.

Keyboard and mouse I need to buy seperately but not form my "PC" cost. I am coming from using a MacBook so need a keyboard and mouse. Main concern is comfort especially with the mouse.

Think he is sold out on those as per a PM to him on the 15th. He will however do it with an i7-4790 for a wee bit more.

Best to PM him though as his stock comes and goes.

Thanks for the extra info, maybe just pop your head in tomorrow and see what you think of the PSU and GPU I choose.

Yeah I also heared there might not be any more bundles.
With that mobo tho, can it only take 2x RAM sticks? I'm just worried about later and upgrades maybe?

No way, I've got you covered it has 4 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 32 GB of system memory.

That's great news. I must have read the wrong one. If you say that mobo is good then I will speak to potterh tomorrow and find out if he has any more bundles or what the price difference will be going i7.

Really just looking for the best pc around the R10k mark and something that will at least last a while and do everything I need. So whatever you say I will go for.

Maybe I was too concerned about the gaming aspect of it all, seeing as you already own a XBOX, if he is in fact sold out of the i5, the i7 being multithreaded should give you a nice bump in performance, you can then go for something like a GTX 750 Ti, but I'll see what I can do when you know about the availability, cost and case you want.

This is the board if you want to check it out : GIGABYTE-B85M-D3H

The B85 chipset sits between the enthusiast Z chipsets and budget H chipsets.

I ordered my CPU from PotterH and the following from Takealot last month on 20 December.
RaidMax 730W PSU 135mm Blue LED Fan R 899.00
Coolermaster N500 ATX Chassis No PSU - Black R 839.00 (USB 3.0 ports in front x2)
Asus H97M-E Motherboard - Socket 1150 R 1,499.00

I see everything except the mobo has gone up almost a grand, roughly R300 up in price each component! I felt pressured to buy my stuff before Xmas so I could have time to build it and play games, also the axing of Nene did not bode well for the Rand. So glad I bit the bullet!

I'm running the above with 16GB (4x4gb) DDR3 RAM that I had and an old GTX 570. You could go for a 2nd hand graphics card if you want to save some bucks there?

I don't want to get a GPU that in a few months will start to struggle but also not sure if I need one aimed only at gaming (if that makes sense)?

With regards to cases, I see they have gone up quite a bit but have found this one -

http://www.rebeltech.co.za/midi-tow...0-kwn2-midi-tower-windowed-siade-panel-b.html

What you think? It has front USB 3 and can take quite a few HDD's etc. Unless there something better?
