What phone do you suggest

My wife is looking to upgrade her phone.

She is looking for:
5MP (still) camera or better - video quality not important
Full QWERTY keypad
3G or better

She is looking at Blackberries, but I am hoping she would go for an Android phone.

Which Android phones has these 3 features and are available through Vodacom?

Edit: Also, don't make the same mistake as what I've made with my wife. If she wants a BlackBerry, there is probably a good chance that all her friends are on BlackBerry messanger. Give her a Berry then if that's the case - otherwise you won't hear the end of it.

I don't know - the 8520 is pretty cheap, and sure, you have to pay for the data - but at least that's ALL you need! There's a reason that the "herd" is getting BlackBerries - they're cheap and they work!

Try setting (and teaching) somebody on a Nokia E72 to communicate using data only - I can guarantee you won't get your less-than-tech-savvy mom / dad / wife up and running easily!

OP there arn't many full qwerty android devices besides the Milestone, the Milestone 2 and the HTC Desire Z worth mentioning.

BB rocks this world. But otherwise go for the Galaxy. I always swore I would never go for touchscreen, but its actually so easy to type on.

Why not look at the Samsung Galaxy, which has all these features. It's touch screen only, but the keyboard is easy to use (and has the swype function, I quite like it).

With all the apps from Android, it's a great phone and I found it easy to navigate.

Come on you can't say the 8520 or any BB is cheap Web browsing is compressed on BB just like Opera Mini, most will pay less than the R59 for BIS. If she receives a lot of emails, then maybe than the unlimited becomes cheaper.

Price is not that much of a deal breaker, although I do not want to pay iPhone range prices.

I like the E72, especially with the free navigation. The HTC Desire looks good too. Some of the other phones are not being considered purely because they do not have a 5MP (or better) camera.

Now to go shopping for data packages.

I am just trying to give her some options. She knows even less about whats available than what I know. In the end it will be her choice.

Now to go shopping for data packages.

Best package you can take with any smartphone is a TopUp contract. Take a R135 Topup contract with 100 SMS a month, then "top up" the account with R185, buy a 600MB data bundle with it(which should last her two months) and all is good.

Also best to have a TopUp contract, as it guards against R16000 "bill shocks".

Because the thread asked for a phone with a 5 Megapixel camera and 3G - the 8520 doesn't have any of the two. I only mentioned it because Carbon_Fibre made a comment about BlackBerries and herd mentality. I wouldn't suggest an 8520 to uFis - I recommended the Torch (if his wife's friends are using BlackBerries because then she can BBM them).

From personal experience I know that non-tech savy people find a BlackBerry much easier to use than most Nokia's. You don't need to set up a BlackBerry personally - some tech savvy guy (in the Vodashop or wherever) can set that up for you. Have you ever seen a Vodashop guy set up a Nokia to download email?

At the same time, because BBM is already shipped with BlackBerry - most dumb-users can just start chatting. Most dumb-users don't care about 3G - they don't browse the web on their phones. The Facebook app provides them with Facebooking ability. BBM allows them to chat. They don't use their phone's GPS and if they do, Vodacom set up the crap Vodafone navigator.

If something isn't evident on the screen - click the only softbutton (menu-button) - it isn't necessary to decide whether to click the right, center or left softbutton.

The new BlackBerry herd doens't care about features - they care about communicating (for "free") with their friends and using a phone with a long battery life that comes cheaply. That's my opinion why so many people are picking up BlackBerries 8520. Oh yes, it is also the only phone that I've seen where you can enlarge the text enough to enable a 55 year old lady to read everything on the phone - my mom's E66 couldn't do that!
