Hi,
I am planning on doind an upgrade from now till end of the year... I am planning on a 5850/5870 and maybe a Phenom II X4 or an i7... I currently have an Isonic 600W PSU but I got because I had to build my PC quickly and it good enough for my system!

So I need a nice future proof PSU that will run a 5870 and an i5/i7. My budget is like R1k and can maybe go a bit over. I know OCZ make good PSU's but maybe there are better for less.

Thanks

The Corsair HX620 is pretty decent as well.

I have an OC'd i7 with GTX275 and my load consumption never goes over 400 watts. Normally around 370.

+1 got for the HX620.

and i'm saying this after I had a 1000W corsair pop on me so i'm not biased :D

corsair's are awesome!

I have reviewing my budget and I cant get an OCZ or Corsair as they are too much.. my budget is R1000 and no more :(

I have that Vantec. It's quite good. Has 4 modular cables. Cables are a bit stiff. The PCI-e power connectors are not modular.

But it seems to be a solid and quiet PSU and suits my needs right now. I ofcourse don't run a discrete video card so others will have to comment on whether it can provide the power needed. I think the rail the PCI-e connectors are on will have enough though.

You don't need a better PSU, 600 watts is enough for the system you intend to build, unless you going crossfire. Besides that you are not going to find a PSU much better for R1000, I would say rather go ahead with the upgrade and put the R1000 in the bank until you can afford something a little better. No point replacing your 600 watt with another 600watt IMO

Edit: I just check and assuming you have the "iSONIC MEGAPOWER 600WATT MAX" then you should be fine as it has the 2 x 6 pin PCI-E connectors that are required for the 5870

I'm sorry but no. I'd trust a corsair 450watt much more that an isonic 600watt.

As for the op maybe have a look at the coolermaster 650watt. That should be in your price range.

I am just not sure how trusty the iSonic PSU's are... is there a way of testing what the constant output is? because I do not believe it is 600W!

I can get a "Coolermaster eXtreme power plus 650w" for R750Would this be able to run my rig?

AS has been said, the Isonic will run your rig, but for how well and how long is another story.

The Coolermaster Extreme will be more than enough juice. The 5870 uses less power than the 48xx range cards.

Are the CMs reliable?

I have found in experience yes

How much power does the HD5850 use?

edit: from http://www.techspot.com/review/206-his-radeon-hd-5850/

On the power consumption front, the Radeon HD 5850 is rated at 151w for its load consumption level. This compares favorably against the HD 5870 rated at 188w, for a healthy 20% power savings. Meanwhile, those with smaller mid-sized computer cases will be pleased to know that the 5850 measures just 24cm long, making it much shorter than the Radeon HD 5870 and other high-end graphics cards.

R954.33

OCZ Fatal1ty 550W Modular - Continuous Wire: 1 x 20/24 pin ATX ,
R918.04
