I haven't gamed for a couple years and have lost touch of PC hardware performance.

What kind of specs would I need to run BFBC2 and COD4 decently?

Am thinking of buying a low-end gaming rig, but want to check what I actually need so that I don't end up wasting money on something that won't run them!

Thanks :D

Cod4 you can run on p2 with a riva tnt :D but bfbc2 and low end generally ends poorly.

You need a quadcore for the game, runs poorly on a dual core for some people. Depends what you consider low end though.

well most low spec pc's will run cod4 quite easy.. It's fairly old, BC2 on the other hand is a little more hectic. It's recommended to use a good quad core or better like the i5 750/760 or AMD PII 955/965.

But an i3 with a little OC will also work nice :)

What kind of budget you looking at?
I wouldn't go lower than:
CPU: i3 530 R1020 OC to 3.2GHz (it'll perform like the i3 550 then at R300 less :) )
Mobo: P7H55-M R1034
RAM: G.skill 4GB 1600 CL7 R947 <- I just like these but try get 4GB ram
GPU: GTS 450 R1348
PSU: cx400w R584
Sub-Total: R4934

Then choose HDD, case, and DVD rom you want :)

Hmmmm I got me a E8500 with 4Gigs and it runs fine, GTX 9600 extreme.

But I wouldn't go buy a PC of that spec now.

Ya some people do struggle time though. I think your card is old so the cpu is kickin it's ass where as perhaps a newer gpu would be starved or some shyte :D. Not sure just recall people going on about how poor a dual core was for the game

Thanks for all the info :)

Looks like BFBC2 needs quite a beast so maybe I'll just do COD4:P

Thinking of just upgrading my Mom's PC (lol) to do the occasional gaming, it's:
Pentium Dual Core E5300 Processor - 2.60GHz
1GB DDR2-800
GA-G31M-ES2C (link)

What upgrades (including adding a GPU, of course) would you recommend for COD4 to run decently on it?

Oh and it currently runs Ubuntu so I'd have to load Windows - will Windows 7 be fine or do I need XP?

Sweet thanks, what card would you recommend - I just want it to play COD4 nicely?

Possible a better power supply, because cheap psu's can't handle big cards.

I just don't get how they managed to code a FPS where the CPU is the bottleneck.:erm: Something very off about that.

Because it's a console port which uses mostly CPU unfortunately.

I ran BFBC2 fine on a AMD 3800+ and 8800GT, just had to modify the config to change some settings and lower the resolution.

Not ideal but it worked, the game looks a lot better with my new PC though and loads much faster.

Almost anything you upgrade to now will run COD4 fine.

You might want a 1gb vga card if you're looking to play with aa/af.. my 512mb 4870 couldn't handle COD4 with moderate aa/af..

My Inno3d GTX 460 768MB was able to run CoD4 at ~100 FPS on 1680x1050 with everything (including AF/AA) maxed out.
With the second GTX460 added to the mix, my FPS was almost 200 :)

Cool! Hey you ever get that noisy fan sorted out?

On a side note, I noticed the older ATI's really don't like COD4's AA. :(

I see...makes sense. That then also means it wasn't a particularly good port if its not adapted to a PC's different CPU vs GPU distribution.

Would COD4 still run nicely if I went for something like an HD4550 512MB (R519, link) instead?

Or would it be much better to rather spend R850 on a card like this HD5570 1GB (link)?

Also, my mom's PC currently has an el-cheapo standard 300W supply, if I added one of the above GPUs and another 2GB stick of ram would I need a better PSU?

It's currently running:
Pentium Dual Core E5300 Processor - 2.60GHz
1GB DDR2-800
1 DVD-RW
1 SATA 7200rpm drive.

Thanks for helping this noob ;)

Spend the extra 350 bucks. But yes, a 4550 would work too. Yes, you def need a PSU upgrade for that.

dude trust me rathe go for the ATI 5770. its an awsome card for the price... and if you shop around you can pick it up for abour R1400 and runs like a bomb.

R850 - R1400 ..... bit of a jump up in price for the guys budget, no.

Ok cool thanks.

R1400 is too much for me:(

So is this card a good deal (am ordering other stuff from Nivo):
Asus ATI Radeon HD5570 Graphics Card 1GB for R859 (link)

And in terms of PSU, what can I get away with?

Gigabyte ODIN 370 watts ATX Power Supply - R289 (link)
Cooler Master eXtreme 390w PSU - R384 (@ Buy Computers, product link (nivo))
other?
