What speeds?

Hi all
Im using grabit to download stuff and was just wondering what download speeds you getting?
It looks like i get a speed of between 30 & 32 KB/s
Is this normal? How do i make it faster?
I was under the impression that i have a 384 KB/s line

You have a 384 kilobit line, not KiloByte. The most you should get is about 38 KB/s. You can phone telkom to upgrade your line to 4mbps, which I use which essentially will give you about 420 KB/s on some sites, but the cost is more per month

You max theoretical speed is surely 48 kB/s. That being 384kb/8=48kB.

And that is the max that you get if you look at all the raw data being transferred, but everything being transferred is not user data, i.e. data that you as the user are interested in. There are all kinds of overhead coming from TCP, ATM, PPPoE, etc. Once overhead is taken into account the speed you can expect for user data on a 384 line is about 38-40 kB/s, depending on certain conditions.

8 bits = 1 byte (b)
1024b = 1 kilobyte (kB)
1024kB = 1 Megabyte (MB)
1024MB = 1 Gigabyte (GB)

but be at lest grammar savvy - must of = must have.

not actually since their server is over used atm , u wouldnt beable to max it , iv got a 2mb line and getting 50kb/s

What is over used? I easily get 400 KB/s off any download even download.com if I use a download manager, not everyone just downloads from the news server

What download manager do you use teraside?

I find that not all downloads come down at full speed, actually they max out at 50KB/s. I'm using FlashGot for Firefox.

Also, my iTunes downloads come down at worse than 384k line speeds.

It fluctuates bro. Remember when we both posted last year we've got 512k download speeds? Anyways, some days it's full speeds, other days it crawls. I use Orbit download manager and it integrates with FF as well. I won't say all my downloads are fast, but most are with Orbit.

Cool. I'll give Orbit a go later but I was under the impression that FlashGot was the best manager for FF, in any case I'll still try it out.

Any idea about iTunes though? My SA podcasts come down at 3Mb/s+ while international podcasts crawl at <300Kb/s.

Have no idea how to improve it, can you use a download manager with Itunes? I always say that our International link to the USA is the slowest one we have, downloads to Europe are much faster, quote me on that

Not really - I am usually very technically jacked up!
I was just really tired - im well rested now - throw smtg at me - got no int cap so i cant google it.

Just joking guys - i am very technically inclined - but i just like to keep u guys busy late at night - plus i was a bit bored and thought it might be an interesting question, just to see how it would play out.

Sorry teraside - I really didnt mean it like that - I didnt intend to waste any bodys time.
I of all ppl know how valuble time is.
I really wanted to know the speed issue, i was truly tired and could`nt think of the answer - you gotta love the net man - you think of smtg and sm1 will answer it.
