Hi guys. I can actually count on my one hand how many threads iv created since joining many years ago. well i feel this forum is good if need info before buying a certain tech gadget.

well to start off, Im not a hardcore android or apple fan but i love both and feel the choice a customer makes should be personal preference unless they don't really know what they buying at all.

well i started off with a samsung galaxy s1, rooted the phone, installed custom roms, played with some apps they required root access etc. then i got bored of that and went to buy an iphone 4, done the same, jailbreak, cydia, installous etc, now i upgraded to the iphone 5, jailbreak, cydia,no installous(alternatives used) etc you know the drill. now im a bit bored of IOS

now my question is that I would like to purchase a tablet. something that has good hardware specs and is priced reasonable. these are my choices. as per above you can see im not really bothered weather its android or ios as I can adapt to whatever I buy.

Samsung Galaxy tab 7.0
ipad mini
google nexus 7
Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1

iv done alot of research compared specs on gsmarena. but im still struggling to decide what to take

the galaxy tab 7.0 is good, but specs are getting a bit old seeing that it has dual core cpu and 1 gb ram, the ipad mini is similar specd but im told but guys that have the galaxy tab the ipad mini is a better device, more responsive and display is better.
the google nexus has some good hardware specs, like nvidia tegra and its quad core but iv read many horrible things on other sites that people exp alot of hardware issues, like sound not working or the lcd screws comes loose. then the galaxy note 10.1 seems like another good tablet it has quad core cpu and i think its 1 or 2gb ram but its just slightly over my budget

im looking at paying around R250pm on contract. iv done my research as well and all 3 devices are in my budget, and they even cheaper with FNB.

but i cant decide on what device to take.
*It must have wifi, i dont care about 3g/data/gprs
*its going to be used at home, outside for movies,Internet surfing at home
*will be used in the family for my wife and daughter(shes 3)
*i would prefer a responsive touch screen, as I play alot with my brothers ipad and its quite good
android or ios doesnt matter, although I am a ubuntu fan and i see ubuntu is going to release their OS out for the *devices above except IOS
*pref would also prefer a tablet that has a screen size under 10", personal preference
*the hardware on the device shouldn't make me upset that in a few months down the line i feel i should of taken a quad core due to newer OS upgrades that perform better on higher end hardware specs(im in IT but trust me i know that you will never ever be up to date with technology, i just feel that dual core cpu's are a bit old now, and its better to get a quad core cpu tablet)

any help in this regard will be appreciated, i know its a alot to read. but like a said in the beginning, Im hardly ever creating threads. I only do if I need some info

I've had the Nexus7 and the iPad Mini, and a couple bigger tablets - Sony S, iPad2+3. Out of them all I like the Mini the most but I end up using the iPad3 myself because of the resolution. Honestly can't say anything negative about the nexus7 from a feel POV but I feel like the iPad Mini is better made and the app selection is enormously better. I wouldn't go for a Note10.1, it's awful. Tab 7.0 is now outdated as well. The Note 8.0 is meant to be good from reviews though.

i don't know much about it, but am anxiously awaiting the note 8. not sure it'll be available on contract.

maybe i should wait for the note 8.0 then, release date was feb 2013 but not sure when its releasing here

Galaxy Note 10.1 is one of the best at the moment. But I'm sure with the advent of the S4, there are probably new models to be coming soon!

From those you listed I will say go for the Galaxy Note 10.1.....really a very good tablet and also looks pretty decent and should definitely be fun to play with and even more so if you root it etc etc.

I personally would wait for the Sony tablet Z :)

hi why would you say the note 10.1 is awful, anything specific I should take into consideration?

Samsung 7.7 inch, P6800, esp if you are going to root it. It's a bit more scarce but go look at the specs.

its more or less the same as the galaxy tab 2 7.0. but it comes out in 3.2 honeycomb as per gsmarena

It's a bit better specced than the tab2, and maybe even slightly better than the ipad mini (depending on your needs). It comes out with honeycomb, but if you are going to root it you can update it to the official ICS released for it, or maybe even a later version.

Just throwing it in the mix.

You don't have to root it to update it to the official Samsung ICS.

Yes I realise, just saying that if he normally goes the root way then the tablet only coming out with android 3.2 really isn't a factor. I just worded it poorly :o

Nexus 7 is also great.

Definitely Note 8".

If you are in a hurry the iPad Mini is a very good choice and the screen resolution is very good (despite what some might say).

I have the Note 10.1 and it is a truly awesome tablet. I use it for work as it is the most versatile tablet I've ever used. The latest JB update from Samsung gives you all the latest goodies and a very slick interface.

But if I was in your position I would wait for the Note 8" which I believe is going to be a winner.
