what tests to do on a new laptop?

if you got a new gaming laptop, and want to give it some good tests, what tests would run??

software tests, as I will only be able to remote into the machine with teamviewer

want to eliminate any potential heat/software/cooling issues. If there is something, need to RMA and get it sorted out asap

1m drop test <- most important!

After that... :p
Furmark to test GPU
Prime95/IntelBurnTest to test CPU and RAM (I prefer the latter)
If you're really keen run Prime95 + Furmark at the same time for a crazy will never happen in real life stress test
Monitor temps via HWMonitor

No restarts, lockups, high temps etc from those and you're good to go
 
you should use udpixel to test if there are any dead pixels on the screen, iv'e encountered many screens that had them when i bought both new and secondhand

I dont recommend running furmark on a laptop due to the heat it will make the, plastic could bubble (ive seen this before) and the only game ive seen that will use 99% of the GPU is Farcry 4.

I would say let the thermal paste set after a couple of days of usage before you start stressing the thing.
 
Heaven benchmark, CrystalDiskMark to see drive speeds, 3D Mark Vantage Basic, Maxon Cinebench 11.5 and 15.0 (both produce different results, but with both results you can compare to other scores online), to name a few. Passmark Performance Test is also useful, because they have a gigantic chart of every CPU they've ever benchmarked or had benchmark submissions and you can easily compare overall scores from different products. Fishbowl is a HTML5 browser-based benchmark by Microsoft that's pretty cool to watch and it reacts in real-time to performance changes, so you can see how the notebook performs on battery or plugged in and how the different power profiles affect it.

Done it on every laptop I've ever had without issue. Just dont be stupid about it letting it run for hours on a hot summer day.

And heat cycling the paste is hardly going to change much, in older pastes it works out to a whopping 0.5°C

This. Give it an hour and see what happens.

Why should you be nervous? You've got the ear of a nominal MSI rep at your fingertips.
 
Looks like these tests will have to wait... Laptop delivery has been delayed!

Laptop arrived.

I installed Furmark and let that run. I also installed HWInfo to monitor temps and any potential throttling issues.

Looks like everything is seated and temps are well within acceptable range.

Performance totally blows my current laptop out of the water. Got about 880 points on my current laptop for Furmark. So I'm very satisfied. Now I just need to get my hands on it.
