So I bought a 1TB Seagate Freeagent about 2 months ... copied data on for a collegue at work ... and she dropped it :/ There's a slight sound (bzzzz ... bzzzz ... bzzzzz) when it's turned on .... but it's pretty dead. No lights ; no PC recognision - nothing

Do I use it as a paper weight? People don't actually repair HDD, do they?

If they repaired them, would you use them?
I would not.

Open it up, the platters are beautiful, hang the platters under your car rear-view mirror instead of a CD.

No. By the time it's fixed... Its useless.
I found a good use for old CD Roms...

throw it in the bin, or try your luck by taking it back from where you bought it from.
Im sure you have at least 1year warranty on that drive

Lol @ Spiderz. I would try and take it back and claim it just started making this funny noise. Does it have freefall technology? Also, a drop should break those things that easily I'm sure.

Remove the drive from the enclosure and test it. Maybe only the enclosure is damaged. But try to return it first.

Some awesome magnets lurk inside there too, they are useful.

The problem is she's scratched, chipped etc the casing which makes it look 2 years old, despite it being only 2 months old. No box or slip either ... *sigh*

I hardly had it :/ As soon as I copied stuff, she wanted to borrow it ... so I've had it a few days of it's life to copy for her. ffs.

Oh well - thanks ..

Yeah the best you can do is use as a door stopper. Is there important data on there? If not, there really is nothing you can do. Even if there is a way to repair it will cost more than actually buying a new HDD.

You can also get another broken hdd and make yourself a pair of harddrive sandals
